Would you buy a revolver not made by Smith and Wesson?

While I love my Smiths, I own many different lines of revolvers for different purposes.
There was once, about 10-12 years ago, I was putting together a 'woods scouting, hunt club chores, 'woods' carry gun. I wanted something on the order of a stainless 'K' frame. Only I did NOT want a .22, ,.38 or .357. I wanted a .44 Spl. or Mag.
Of course, S&W offerred no such thing.
The answer, a Taurus M441, 4", SS 5-shot .44 Spl. with adjustable sights. Essentially a 'K-framish' revolver.
I've fed it a steady diet of Elmer Keith/Skeeter Skelton .44 Spl. loads and it still pretty tight and shoots well. Other than smoothing the action and putting Uncle Mikes grips on it, not much had to be done.
Don't mind using it HARD and never in a hurry to clean it.
It fits the bill.

Always wanted S&W to make a 'K' frame 5 shot .44 Spl. in a 4" adj. They never did, so I had to go elsewhere.....

No, I hate Ruger with every bone in my body and with the low cost of a Smith and Wesson, Taurus doesn't get my money.

Most of my revolvers are Smiths, but I also have several Colts , and at least one of each of the following: Ruger, Iver Johnson, Webley, Enfield, Mauser, St. Etienne.

I've been tempted on Blackhawks in 41/44/45LCs. The only non-Smith I have now is a Charter Arms 44 I got just for 44 shotshells.

I'm a Pistol People. My most favorite gun is a Custom Colt Delta Elite.. But in revolvers I always favored the S&W. Anaconda 44 is just too big, and Taurus? Don't make me laugh.

Edit:I would jump on a Freedom Arms 454 if the price was right.

With the possible exception of US Firearms' Single Action revolvers, there isn't a single revolver currently in production that I would want to buy.

Asside from 2 Ruger single actions, all my revolvers are S&W's. I no longer have a "need it" list for hand guns. My "want it" list is rather short also. There is nothing on the list but S&W.

Colt python 6 in barrel. Best there is , ever was. Like a diamondback as well.

SAA revolver, yes, I would buy a Colt or one of the better clones, or a Ruger or a Freedom Arms.

But for a Double Action Revolver, today, Generally NO.

I have had several Colt Pythons from the Custom Shop, and one tuned up for PPC By Reeves Junkind of Texas Hiway Patrol fame.

In fact one year the ladies PPC Champion used my Reeves Junkind Python for the Leg Match.

The Colt Python's and the Diamondbacks are very accurate handguns...

But I am just not a 38 Special/357ag kind of guy.

My Sister in Law has one of the 5 shot Taurus revolvers in 44 Mag.
I load ammo for her and it shoots real good. It has the ported barrel and with the rubber grips it is comfortable to shoot with Magnum, anno and espeially with the 3/4 poser lead 240 SWC loads I give her for the deer lease.

I have been shooting S&W Revolvers since the early 1970's. I just cannot carry or use any other DA revolver.

So to the OP, just save your money and get that Mod 27 you really want.

You will never be happy till you do...

IMHO of course.

Still it is not a S&W.

However I am just not a 357 Mag kind of guy.

I will say I do have one "off brand" DA revolver I really like. It is a "Webley" actually made by Enfield in 1924.

It has been modified to shoot 45 ACP with the moon clips, one hald or full.

It is very accurate and shoots perfectly to the sights with 230gr HP and Ball ammo. However I do not shoot full power ammo in it often. I loas some light loads for it with 200gr bullets. It shoots low with these but when i get a chance i am going to get some 230/240gr FP or SWC bullets, and again load them "light" to .455 British specs.

I enjoy shooting this old warhorse and I have been impressed and how it actually functions and shoots.
Its break open action is very fast to reload, and its grip angle and trigger action is very good. It is one good Combat/War Revolver

Sure love my S&W's , but I wont leave a let a Colt get away either if I can help it. My latest purchase was this early Colt Trooper MKIII. Very nice gun.
Twig.

I have a Rossi .22 revolver, and it is a great little gun. I would have no problem buying a Rossi. I also have one of the old style Charter .44 Bulldogs. I bought it mainly out of curiosity, but I would be fine with buying a current model Charter Arms.

I know that Taurus has really raised its standards, but I can remember the piece of junk they produced around 1980-1981, when I started in the police academy. I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Taurus, although they do have some nice looking guns. (And yes, I know they own Rossi now.)

I'm not really into revolvers anymore (and as of this post, I don't own one) which is somewhat strange because a few years ago, all I had were revolvers, and I didn't care anything about semis. However, if I was going to buy a revolver, it would be a S&W or a Ruger. I would buy a Colt DA revolver as a collectible, but I don't think I would want to carry/shoot one on a regular basis...just because it is getting harder to find gunsmiths who can tune or repair them, or so I have read.

I would never buy any other brand revolver...and especially not a Taurus. I owned one, and that was enough. One of the shops I frequent recently had some of their small revolvers on clearance for like $250 apiece, and they weren't selling (it is a small, rural shop, so that may have something to do with it.)

I've bought Ruger, Taurus and Cimmaron. All have given me excellent service. As for Taurus, the ones I've bought have always gone straight to my local gunsmith for two hrs of cleaning, polishing and any adjustments. They come from the factory pretty filthy, which might be the reason they have such a bad reputation. I've been very lucky I guess.

This thread needs more pictures. :D
