Would you risk your life using a Shield

Wayne

If I had your job putting my life on the line protecting insured property I would quit, move to a safer town with a lower cost of living and enjoy the well earned law enforcement pension.

Not knocking Atlanta but you can purchase a lot more home for the money in parts of Utah or Texas and being retired you could go rural and avoid the rat race living in a crowded city.

As a retired LEO, I now work high risk security details, such as plainclothes bank robbery prevention or wearing a suit for bank robbery prevention, robbery prevention in very expensive jewelery stores where they have $20,000,000 in product. I carry a Glock 23 40 cal, concealed for work but am looking at the Shield. I also wear body armor for these details. I have read a lot of negative reports on the Shield. I need a gun that is reliable and capable of putting down a suspect if I were to get in a shooting. The gun must be small enough to conceal, light enough to carry 12 hours a day. A 1911 is to big and heavy, am looking at the Shield due to its size.

After reading the comments made here of people wanting more firepower. They need to stop and think of where the OP is working, it is not a warehouse, but a place of business with numerous people involved. A place where one does not start a firefight. There are very few people capable of engaging multiple targets and making the threat go away before others are shot to hell. These business's are insured. Just my thoughts.

I echo others' comments in that you need high cap gun for that job. Chances are if you have problems, its going to be a well armed BG and probably multiple BG for high value targets. A shield would be a BUG.

Being that you aren't allowed to carry a BUG, a high cap. sidearm and spare mags becomes even more important...especially on one man jobs!

The Shield would certainly give you "physical comfort" for all-day carry, but I'm not sure how much "mental comfort" it would allow due to it's limited capacity (for your intended use).

Personally, I'd be carrying a Sig 226.

Have you looked at a FNH Five-seveN? Goofy name, it's the 5.7mm twenty round mag pistol that with the right ammo would be just the ticket. They are fairly slim and light and that mag is filled with bullets. Two extra mags at your side and you are already carrying more than a box of ammo. The recoil is supposed to be very minor.

FNH USA - Distinct Advantage :: FN Five-seveN®

That's another great choice.

I use a Shield 9mm as a BUG attached to my soft armor as an inter-city Uniform LEO.

It's also my summer vacation gun when in low threat areas like Sanibel Island in Florida.

So to answer the question Would I trust my life to a shield? I do on a daily basis.

The best gun to have is the one you actually have when you need a gun.

Once reliability issues are settled, the bigger the gun you have when you need a gun, the better you will feel about it.

Even the "full-size" Glock is just not that big.

If you are working a security function, and you think you need a smaller weapon, I suggest that you need to make some adjustments on your attire, your holster, your conditioning, or your training.

Or maybe all of them.

Here we have the FULL SIZE Glock 22 literally dwarfed by a plain old 4" Ruger .357 revolver.

Go M&P9c

I think the smallest handgun I would trust in your case would be the M&P9c Talo. Comes with X-grip adapter so you can run full size - 17rnd - magazines in it.

Light enough (21.7oz.) for different carry positions like IWB, OWB, crossdraw, etc., but still powerful (17 x 9mm :D ) enough to deal with more than just one thug.

Alessi shoulder rig with a Glock 19, and two G17 mags on the off side.....

Mine is comfortable all day, standing, driving, or simply sitting.

Stay safe....

Guys the op is in California. I don't think he can have anything larger the 10 round mags.

He is retired LE so not sure if that exempts him anymore. Maybe he could enlighten us on this.

I would consider either the M&P40C or the Glock 27 for your working circumstances. I just compared both at the range bought the M&P40C. Keep in mind I already own a G23 so it was a surprise Imliked the M&P 40C so much more, especially the feel in the hand which had a signifanct role in my choice.
