I just bought a new in the box SW model 625-3, 3" barrel. It's an expensive purchase but one that I have been looking for a long time. The sale person said he wouldn't shoot it. I love to take it to the range but should I?

In a New York minute, and everybody knows that ain't but 30 seconds.;)

Personally I wouldn't buy a gun that I didn't plan to shoot. That being said I guess the real question would be how much the value will be affected. If the gun is unfired then you will dock the value some and maybe even significantly, but if you shoot the gun on occasion and take care of it other than that first major drop in value it isn't going to keep reducing the value. All of my guns I plan on keeping forever so their value is of secondary concern to what I want out of them. There is someone on the forum that always says something to the effect of if you don't shoot it and don't plan to ever sell it your just keeping it nice for someone else and there is alot of truth to that. Now if the gun is strictly an investment that you plan to turn for a profit in the future then you will maximize your returns by maintaining its unfired condition.

Did you buy it as an investment? If you didnt buy it intending on making money on it, then shoot the living crap out of it.

I'm in the same boat. My wife got me for chirstmas a NIB/never fired 625-3 5". Have not shot it yet but am really itching to. I think I am going to have to.....

I thought about this all yesterday and this morning. The gun is a beauty. So thanks to you, I will be shooting it in about 3 hours!!

Is there any reason not to? Would a never-fired gun be worth more?

I got several smith's I would NOT shoot. Any version of a 625 would be a shooter to me! Its just not a big collector item in my book.

A 3" 625-3 isn't particularly rare. When they were introduced, many went unsold for a long time. There wasn't a lot of interest in short-barreled N-frames. Tastes have changed, and now everybody wants one. I've sold all of my 3" N-frames except my 625-6 which is a very rare gun, but not especially valuable. And yes, I'd shoot a NIB -3. I've fired several NIB stainless guns from the 70's and 80's, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

I couldn't buy a firearm and not shoot it. Put it in a museum if you don't want to shoot it. Otherwise, grab the ammo and go use it for what it was made for.

Enjoy it!

William
