I owned this gun and did an article for S&W journal. I sold the gun several years ago. Gun was listed on Gun Broker, auctioned ended early this morning.

Very nice, Roy.

This is one of the prewar frames that shipped after the war. It left the factory on August 22, 1946. The S on the barrel flat is the giveaway that it shipped postwar. My records indicate that the S is not on the butt. I doubt that it actually has the sliding hammer block safety - most, if not all, of these lacked that feature, despite the S stamp.

Added: Just checked the GB listing, so I suppose you already know all this. Sorry if I'm Repete Pete.

Sooo, after reading all this I still don't know if it has the new hammer block. Of course I may have missed something. These prewar/post war guns are really interesting. My little 32 S&WL does not have it. Then again, it has no S stamped any where. It's easy enough to check, with out removing the side plate. My curiosity got the best of me on my 32, w/4 line address.

It sure is a great looking piece! Hopefully, you were happy just after making the sale, maybe not as happy now.
Larry

Jack, very small "S" on barrel flat no "S" with serial number on butt.
I don't remember taking side plate off so I can not comment on hammer block.

Fairly typical with these units. Thanks.

It may not be worth the trouble, but the odds are that it does not have the new type safety. If you ever find out, please let me know.

P.S. I hope all is well there in southern Nevada. Since I sold my property in Pahrump, I have not been back.

Ya know, you may post closed auctions...
Just a moment...

please note the "Y" inspector stamp shown in picture 22 of 34 before our friends at gun broker delete the sale. This "Y" stamp is also present in Elroy's 49 vintage M&P snub nose.

coincidence ?...............I don't think so

Not a big deal. It is a fitter's mark. Fitters were allowed to chose their mark. We are only talking 3 years difference between these units. Why would we be surprised that the same fitter is working for S&W in '46 and '49?
