Michael McIntosh, who wrote mostly about shotguns and wingshooting, died this week.

If you're not familiar with him, and have any interest in shotguns (particularly fine double guns and O/Us) and bird hunting, you owe it to yourself to learn more about him.

He was a terrific writer and was universally thought of as gentleman of the old school.

We lost a good one this week.

didn't realize until i saw his obit in the local paper that he was from here. have three of his books autographed to me from him. met him at lake of the ozarks on several occasions and he never mentioned we were from the same town. was a nice person, unlike some of the gun writers who work at being jerks.

I think I have one of his books, and read his material in, "Sporting Classics."

Sorry to hear of his passing.

I can't believe it.... how did he die? He was so young.

Does anyone know what he died from?

it did not say in the obit. just that he passed away and showed a picture of him with the longish hair and usual beard.

Thanks, perrazi.... I've tried looking on Sporting Classics' web-site and a few other places but didn't find anything. I'm gonna keep looking.

He was 66 and died in hospice last Saturday.Pneumonia, it looks like.

I've read most of his work. Many years ago I had 6 Parker shotguns V through A grade. All one read about was Parker. I started running across some AH Fox doubles cheaply, after all no one wanted them as Parkers were the hot one. I shot all 6 Parkers and 5 Foxes in sporting clays. After a while I started believing the "cheap" Foxes were actually better made and had a better action. Parker did have several weak links in the action. I had an old time gunsmith fix them. He told me he's fixed quite a few Parkers but never a Fox. After some years I felt Foxes were the better shotgun. I couldn't tell anyone without starting a heated debate, even folks who never shot or owned one. In one of Mr. McIntosh's books or an article he stated the same. I knew then that he made up his own mind and was not afraid to let it be known. I read all of of his works after that. He moved back to a cornfield outside Pella, Ia last winter (?). My sister-in-law lives there, she got me his number. We were in town Memorial day but I didn't have time to call. Dang, he was good and will be missed.

Before an interest in S&W, I followed SxS shotguns. I have 3 of his books on american SxS shotguns and he knew a lot abt them. I would have loved to live his life. He will be missed and may he rest in pease, Larry SWCA1761

I admired his writing talent but never would have wanted to live his life.
