X Frame in .350 Legend

It's a good fit for the platform but not sure it will draw large numbers of sales away from .357 Magnums. Also, the "common rifle/handgun cartridge" concept is appealing, but this weighs nearly as much as some lightweight .350 Legend rifles!

I was rather surprised when I saw the S&W release this morning on YouTube. While this particular cartridge and revolver may have a future with the IHMSA crowd, handgun hunters, and the "give me more power" crowd, it's not a combination that is sparking my interest.

Goes good with your AR-15 in 350 Legend, or your Henry single shot, or some other bolt action rifle.

I'm not their target audience but I'm sure glad they keep putting out new/different stuff in the firearms world. It's good to have choices ;)

Should be a good deer and hog buster at 50 yards, though I'd much prefer a dark finish on a hunting handgun to the bright stainless.

Cool. I wonder what kind of velocities it will get. I am thinking around1800fps from a 150 gr bullet. A 357 158 gr Herret gets 2000 from a 12" barrel with no gap and about 1850 with a 10"

I would like to get an X frame cylinder with just 5 or 6 pilots and make a 30 Herret

Get the 350 Legend and make your own 35 Herret cylinder! Maybe you could make it an 8 shooter. I don't know the bolt circle on X frames, or I could figure out how many of what size would fit.

While that would be interesting, I think a 308 caliber would be a screamer. My 30 Herret gives me 2300fps with a 110gr and 2100 with a 130gr.

I have even dreamed of a bottle necked 30 in an N frame. The 357 Bain and Davis, while interesting, just didn't give that much more bang for the buck. I have several loose N frame 357 barrels and cylinders and have never been impressed enough to make one. I am more temped to ream a 44 cylinder right to the stop notches, put in some heat treated 4140 inserts and ream them to a shortened 30 herret and make a 308 cal barrel similar to what I did for a 327 K frame

I guess that's my thought on the X-frame in general. By the time you carry a handgun that big and heavy, you might as well carry a lightweight rifle.

To each their own though.

It is good see Smith doing something on the revolver side though. It seems they barely make revolvers any more.

They'd be able to make and sell more if they'd just get rid of that silly lock and hole.

Which is me to a T.
I hunt deer and coyotes with a 350 in both bolt and AR platform. I think it's a fabulous cartridge for this. I built a 7.5 inch 350 AR Pistol and it's a hoot. Really this revolver should be a mild gun to shoot. I was tempted once to buy a BFR in 350, now I'm glad I waited. I'm going to have to start saving up my money.

I live in a state that allows me to use this for deer, as it is a straight wall cartridge. And I am interested.I will be looking into one of these when they are released, cost of shooting will be 1/3 of my 44mag.

While I agree that carrying a X frame especial one with 8 or more inch barrel isn't saving much over a rifle. I have a Mohawk 600 in 350 Rem mag which weights 5.5 empty and is only 39" overall, add a pound plus for wearing a 3x9X Redfield wide view and it sure isn't much harder to carry than a 71 oz (4.6#)X frame. But a scope on an X frame and add a lb to it and a bunch of bulk. I have a 8 3/8" 500. It was way bulky with a 2X Leopold. Went to regular sights.

But, exactly how handy they are isn't the point. What you chose to carry and for what is a personal choice. Unless I had a moose permit I probably would' take that 350 mag or my X frame hunting. Maybe if I was going fishing where there were LOTS of big bears. `But, that is me. Not you. It is great that we have lots of choices.

While the 350 Legend ain't tripping my trigger I can see where some stated restrictions can make it a nice option. It actually should be real effective to. Plus, it should be a lot of fun.

Look at rifles do we "need" all the 17s. 204, 22, 243, 6.5 270. .284. 7mm. 300. 338 350 416 458, 500s LOL

Got to love all the choices no mater how silly some of it is and how ridiculously small the differences.

I'm with jag1954. I like more choices, too, and like that S & W is making new revolvers. Neighbor tells me this is a great deer cartridge in an AR, especially for the recoil shy. Rifle and handguns chambered for same cartridges always interest me. Sounds like I'm in line for one.

Cause this is 'merica!

I've emailed Ruger about making a 350 Legend Mini-14. Kind of a throwback to the Win 1907 .351. Would make an amazing 'house gun' for four and two legged critters in the country. Never heard back. Maybe because I also bugged them to make one in .450BM.

I'm sure this revolver has a market, but it's not for me. Well, until Ruger makes that rifle at least...

350 Legend vs 357 Maximum

In terms of real world ballistics, given use in a revolver (and inherent limitations & characteristics), there's not much to choose from between the 350 Legend and the 357 Maximum. Or, perhaps I'll qualify that by saying: if you're a handloader.
If you're a cast bullet shooter, all the more so.
The 357 Maximum offers a lot of advantages being a rimmed cartridge.
Once you start loading 35 cal. cast rifle bullets with a wide meplat for hunting use, the ability to properly crimp without worrying about either headspacing or bullet set-back due to recoil, makes the advantages of the rimmed Maximum case obvious.

But, as a marketing gimmick, and/or as a pairing for those who own a rifle in 350 Legend and/or only shoot factory ammo, by all means, enjoy!

Funny to observe that, right off the bat, folks are wondering what other cartridges they can rechamber it for.
Might I suggest a wildcat .358-444 Marlin?!

Specs are:
double action only.
I saw that listed on the spec list on the website also.

Bet ya a dollar that someone fat fingered something, no way this is a DAO X-frame.

I have no real interest in the .350 Legend but I think this new model is a great thing and I hope it means they will expand the huge X-frame to other calibers. I think it would be tons of fun in .327 Federal Magnum.

I will say that the .350 Legend is perplexing in a 7-shot. The X-frame cylinder is GIGUNDO in size and S&W has successfully made an 8-shot N-frame .357 Magnum so one less round of .350 Legend in a larger cylinder seems odd to me.

Anyway, I think this is a neat intro, hope it gains steam.
