One of my good friends just became a Grandfather and his wife is still out of town helping their Daughter out with the new born Grandchild. He called me this afternoon and invited me over for a Cigar and a Bourbon which I immediately accepted. :) I brought over a few cigars and he took one of mine but he gave me a cigar I that I had never tried before. It was a Padron 7000 Natural which was so damned good I only put it down when my fingers started burning! :D The cigar was a 60 ring gauge and 6.5" in length and just a super great tasting cigar full of flavor.

He also cracked open a bottle of Basil Hayden Bourbon which I had heard many good things about but had never tried, excellent as well. What a great evening!! :)

Double likes. Padron 7000 is an excellent cigar. Best cigar I ever smoked was a Padron 1926 Anniversario. It was over twenty-five years ago and I still remember the experience.

Basil Hayden is one of my favorite bourbons, probably due to the high rye content, 48%.

So when you say you had a fine evening, I believe you.

Ahem .... whiskey nerd here with a minor correction ;)

Basil Hayden is a high-rye bourbon, an older version of the Old Grand-Dad recipe, 63% corn, 27% rye, 10% malt. That is significantly more rye than Beam's standard ~15%.

It does sound like a very fine evening.

When I returned home I was talking to my Son on the phone and he told me the Basil Hayden is one of his favorite too, but that his Numero Uno Fav. at this moment is Elijah Craig ( 94 Proof ), which I have yet to try as well. It looks like I'll have to make a trip over to the Liquor Store in the nest week. :)

The Padron line is a real winner and one I have not explored much. That needs to change! ;) It will certainly be in my rotation now! :)

Thx. The guy who told me 48% was a nerd, but not a whisky nerd.

I know how Bourbon is made but I don't really pay much attention to percentages of the components. Either I like it or I don't - that's what matters to me.

I also find that I usually like Bourbon's that are at or less than 100 Proof. The 120 - 130 proof (at least for me) has a bit too much burn for my liking.

That's barrel proof, and those whiskeys (like Booker's) aren't meant to be consumed like that, but diluted with water down to the proof of your liking. That's the whole point; since you get different flavor notes at different proofs, a 130 proof bourbon gives you a lot of room to experiment, while with an 80 proof bottling there isn't far to go before it gets too thin.

There are guys who think drinking undiluted barrel proof bourbon proves how tough they are. A bit like shooting a .44 Magnum without hearing protection ;)

If you enjoy the 90 proof bourbons you should try the Woodford Reserve double oaked. It's tasty

Yes Sir - It is currently my #1 Fav!! Just bought another 2 bottles on sale. Total Wine and More had them for $64/ltr. which is pretty cheap for around here! LOVE IT!!

And just in case someone wants to know - it's totally different than the Regualar Woodford's Reserve (much better) - - and I DO like the regular Woodford's very much.
