YOUR FIRST HANDGUN?

My first handgun was my first service revolver!
When I came on our department in 1978, officers supplied their own carry guns but it had to be a 4" or 6", .38/.357 revolver. The police supply dealer had a used 4" Ruger security-six with target stocks. The price was $165.00 but he took $10.00 off. I carried it on duty and shot it a lot at the range and always liked it. One of the other officers reloaded so I always had a supply of inexpensive practice ammo. One summer we thought we would set up a hick version of a Hogan's alley. We bush hogged some lanes in my Dad's hayfield and set up some frames and targets. One even popped up when we pulled a rope! We shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds that weekend and afterwards I noticed the cylinder didn't close properly. I mailed it to Ruger and they promptly repaired it and sent it back as good as new.
Shortly after, the department bought and issued model 66's and I sold the Ruger to a reserve officer who left the area soon after.
I wish I still had the Ruger but at least I have the sales tag.

I guess the earliest gun I thought of as "mine" was an old 12 Gauge SxS in the late 60's or early 70's. Can't remember exactly what it was. I grew up in a gun house so they were just everywhere. The 1st one I bought as an adult was a Super Redhawk which I sold in financial hard times. Have since traded into an exact copy, so I sort of still have it. I bought a 5906 shortly after the Redhawk that left me at the same time. It's been replaced with a 6906 that I like a lot better.

Interesting thread to read through.

My first was an H&R top break .22 revolver . Sweet little pistol . I sold it to a co worker a few years later if I recall .

First was 36 cal black powder, first modern was a Ruger single six 22/22 mag. Had rifles before that.

My first was a Smith and Wesson 22A-1 bought in 2003. Shortly followed by a Enfield Mark 4 (I think?) bolt action chambered in British .303 my Dad gave me. He also gave me 100 rounds of vintage ammo with corrosive primers. Luckily, when I went to the range with it for the first time, a knowledgable range officer warned me about the corrosive primers.

When I was 14 I pestered my dad for a hand gun…any handgun. So, for my 15th birthday I got a slightly used h&r 649. This to go with my marlin single shot .22 & H&r topper in 20ga.

Growing up in rural TN had its perks…like shooting in the back yard.

My first handgun was a Smith and Wesson 28-2, I got it at Montgomery Ward in Oakland, California in 1970. I had to shell out $106.50 to buy it. I had originally wanted a k-22 and I ended up with a model 35 about two weeks after I bought the Highway Patrolman. At the time, if you found a Smith and Wesson revolver with adjustable sights, it was like you won the lottery. Finding two within a short period of time was nearly unheard of.

First? Uhh, that's a hard one. Don't recall the VERY first. But the first few were:

-- An H&R .22 revolver, blue, 9-shot, 2-inch barrel, cheap but good.

-- A Wilkinson Arms .22 automatic, black, very small. [1]

-- A Titan .25 ACP pistol, very small, cheap. Sold it years ago to a sketchy fellow at a keg party; Lord knows what he did with it  [2]

-- A S&W Model 10 .38 revolver, blue, 3-inch bull barrel.

In 1968 I purchased a Colt Cobra (still have it) for $85 for off duty carry. The range guys bobbed the hammer for an old clothes/under cover assignment in the '70s. I wrapped a rubber band around the grip and stuffed the gun into the front of my jeans, appendix, w/o a holster.

Sadly my first handgun was a stainless Taurus 24/7 in 45 acp. It was a first gen, and turned out to be an awful gun. Their "lifetime warranty" finally replaced the heap with a blued G2, after having mine at their repair facility for almost a year. I sold the G2, brand new, never fired as soon as I could.

TC Super 14 44 mag.. I was 16 and that's the only handgun my mom would sign for.

Problem was I wasn't old enough to buy .44 mag ammunition on my own so I a got used RCBC single stage with everything needed included and learned how to reload. I soon bought a 14 " 30-30 barrel so I could buy my own ammunition but that was expensive. I was reloading for 44 mag AND 30-30 with great success.

Great way to spend time and stay out of "trouble" for a young guy. ;)
