Your thoughts on self check outs?

What is this "paying with a check" in a store of which you speak.;)

This neighborhood is in transition from a glut of 80 something's to 30 something's.When I moved here several years ago I was the youngest guy around lol
The old timers here all drive slow and write checks ;-)
They're all positive we are going to hell in a handbasket any day now
It's a hoot!

There may be no discount, but lowering labor cost most certainly keeps prices from rising as fast. I'm sorry, but like I don't see it as my job to "save" anyone but me and mine when I'm carrying a pistol, I also don't see it as my job to save somebody else's job . . .

Hmmmmm, I wonder about that. As automation, robotics, and population grow, whose responsibility will it become if there are too many people and too few jobs?

I despise them because half the time they don’t work right especially the ones at the grocery store.
Let them put more cashiers where they belong, they do that to eliminate employees!
You notice that all McDonalds have their self serve order kiosks, same thing, get rid of employees. I won’t use them but then again I only go in them when the granddaughter wants to! ;)

Well, there is already an existing economic model, practiced in several countries, in which everyone has a job . . .

For groceries, I bypass the slightly closer Walmart Marketplace with it's slightly lower prices and self-service checkout for the Publix with it's better selection, and better service.

Not only is there only full-service checkout at Publix, but the bagger happily brings the groceries out to your car, loads them in the trunk, and totes the empty cart back to the store. I love that service during hot muggy weather when my breathing suffers.

Use them occasionally, best part about using them is if you use cash, The change is always correct.

When I have a few items and it is not produce by the pound I use them. At Albertsons grocery I won't go near them. Tried them several times and have had issues EVERY time with a malfunction. Plus it takes their tech/staff forever to get it straightened out. And yes there are a couple checkers I avoid at certain stores because they either are SOOO slow or want to stand and chat with each old lady that comes through the line. Often used at WM because only 2 manned stations are available at times and they are busy. Just want to get my things and go.

I was coming toward check out at Walmart with a full cart. A checker
came out and captured me and took me to the self check out to teach
me how to do it. After checking all of my items I took out my check
book (I always pay by check). Sorry, we don't take checks at the
self check out. Why in Hell didn't you tell me before we checked all of
this? She loaded it all back in my cart and I went to the regular check
out. Lesson learned.

Why do people go inline with 2-3 items and pay with a check? What is the green stuff that you carry about in your wallet for. If I had my way everything would be cash, this credit card and check payment is a total waste of time. You waste my time by using them and you are not getting my respect in any way. The word cashier tells me that it was meant to be cash only and my guess is that it would say years of off my standing in line.My wife uses checks and I don't and won't even discuss with her about it now.

those using checks and Credit cards are wasting my time and it makes me angry. Why do we have money? It to be used at the Cashier, not the Checkier. Get with the program!

If you and others give the store enough grief over it, in my case Safeway Grocery store, they perhaps will revert to checkers. That what they did here. Now I'm working on eliminating those nasty plastic bags!
And as far as cash goes; the government is actively working on eliminating it. Cash transactions aren't tracible or more importantely taxable and that's one more reason why the government detests gun shows.

Brand new state of the art Kroger just opened and you can scan and pay when you put items in your cart. I've never used it but others do. I use self check when possible but often the self check has a line and the humans are idle. I use the cashier then.

I can pay for my groceries way quicker with a card than I ever could handling cash. I have to count it, then the cashier counts it, then they have to find change... Ooooh no. I just plug in my CC, the screen asks me to press to confirm and it's DONE.

Over 30 years ago in the UK we started to get cases of checkout rage, almost always caused by somebody writing a check. The prime offenders ALWAYS wait until the last item is rung up before rooting through their pockets/purse to extract their checkbook. Then we get the "ask three times the amount" ritual followed by the frowning/accusing look at the readout in front of them saying EXACTLY what the cashier just told them. It's freakin' maddening.

I think we've all become accustomed to the speed of things with debit and credit cards being accepted everywhere. I know when I was younger mom would go to the grocery store with three kids, fill the cart, have coupons and checkbook in hand and whatever time it took was what it took. No one complained because they were all doing the same thing. All the checkout lanes had cashiers, though.

Now, we're so "go-go-go" that any small delay gets people upset. I just try to remember that someday, God willing, the 80 year old with arthritic fingers trying to keep up with whatever technology has been invented by then will be me.

I think it's the big corporations way to drive us technologically challenged old farts even crazier than we already are. It's a conspiracy I tell you!
