just got a call from my bank. they declined my card this morn n wanted to know if they should have.
someone tried to use my card at pizza hut, IN GEORGIA!
if they had tried this locally, they would have got away with it/
the bank knows where i live.
oddly, i haven't used this card in over a month so i have no idea how my card info got out there.
what i really hate is no one will ever do anything about this.
attempted petit larceny is not something cops will bother with.

got a call from my card that a computer program cost of 849 dollars charged in a store in France .. Nope never been there ..

Card got took .. they replaced my card with a new number and canceled the old one .. When we drove to Seattle we notified my bank so all charges from there and between were not denied .. I used one card for all the charges and only had a small amount in the account just in case ..

Thats why you should use credit cards (and pay them off each month). If the card is used fraudulently, you are not liable. Debit cards are less secure in this regard...if they can steal cash from your account, I think it is likely gone...but credit cards will not hold you liable for charges you did not incur. I've had a few problems over the years...one time someone bought ringside seats to a Las Vegas fight to the tune of $8000. Cost me nothing, but had to cut up the old and get a new card.

Just a few more (millions of) "victimless crimes".

Organized gangs cloning credit cards, selling them on the "dark web". A clerk in a store, a cashier in a restaurant, an unscrupulous on-line business, or just plain hacking can deliver every detail necessary to clone a credit card. The card hits the streets, a few dozen transactions take place before an alert goes out. Merchants out big bucks, credit card companies out mega-bucks (and guess where they recover their costs from), and individuals having to jump through hoops every time it happens.

The same thing has happened to me a few times. Charges have been removed from my statements, and new cards have been issued. But I still watch every line on every statement every month, and I ring the bell loudly whenever I see anything questionable.

It's nothing you did. Unfortunately if you use a CC at all, it happens. My work card has been hacked 3 times. The first time it was hacked, purchases were made in NC, CA and FL in one day. I was in Ohio ALL DAY! The last time was $3500 of computer parts from an online store based in England. It was denied because our credit limit on work cards is $2000. Sill they sent a new card. They don't always get away with something.

CC companies have insurance for such cases and they sent a new card overnight. Not all charges get through. The ones that do are written off.

PSA: NEVER USE A DEBIT CARD ONLINE! You have protection w/CC's. Debit, not so much....

Discover called me a few days after Christmas a few years back. After they convinced me they were really Discover and they told me the reasons for the call I denied a few charges and got a new card on the way.

When I called the local constabulary the "investigating" officer said it would not be investigated because "that could be someone on the other side of the world." I responded "or they could be next door to the S.O. or your supervisor but you will never know because you won't look.' He started to sputter in indignation but I was already in the process of hanging up.

I was hungry, okay? What's a guy gotta do to get a meal? :D

My card was compromised recently - someone spent $700 for a concert in Los Angeles. I like the band but i wouldn't have ever paid $700 to see them play!

Yep, its happened to me too.
Got a notification that my card had been used in a coffee shop somewhere in the mid-west. I forget exactly where, but I'd never been there. Called the credit card company and they refunded the small cost. The rep told me that this was a common test for thieves. Make a small purchase and if it goes through without any problems, then they go to town.

My debit card has been hacked 4 times in the past 18 months . Luckily mu CU keeps close tabs on accounts . They did get sneaky the last time , went to gas stations and charged less than $50 . I found them cause I check my accounts every 1-2 days . My CU always reimbursed me , no questions . There is a pet specialty store close by , and for some reason it struck a cord . Talking to the owner , the new thing is get a wireless card reader , sit outside stores , and suck in all the numbers . My second one was from a local gas station . I do not pay outside , always go inside . It sucks that this is the world we live in , just wish the people doing this stuff would hurry up and go to the big house .

My CC was used by someone else to buy about $940 of tools over the internet. Somehow the thief got my S/S number and was able to call my CC company to change my address to one 1,200 miles away so the zip code attached to the credit card would match where the thief had the tools shipped to. The tools hadn't yet been delivered, I called the police in the town where they were being delivered, and they told me they weren't interested in fraud under $1,000. Lovely, I thought.

I have American Express, seems every couple of years someone get's hold of the card an goes on a spending spree in all 50 states (within 60 minutes). AMEX just puts all the charges on hold and calls me. When I say not me they reverse the charges. Almost always the stores are Amazon, Best Buy and a couple of other box stores.

I had somebody get hold of a credit card number of mine and was buying airline tickets in South America. It kind of ticks me off that the issuer never bothered to check with me, since I've never been anywhere in South America in my life. Just luckily I was checking my balance and saw the charges on got that card shut off quick so the thief couldn't go on another spending spree until I got the statement 3 weeks later. Happily I jumped on it right away and I didn't have to pay a dime.

Lesson learned is you need to have both a bank and CC company that will immediately put any suspected charges on hold (i.e. not pay them) without verification from the you that they are legit. Years ago I had a CC company that would actually call the clerk at the check out line to verify that I was actually the one making the purchase. I traveled a lot so making a $20 purchase at a store 500 miles from home would have the CC company make a phone call to the clerk. A real PIA but it protected me. The clerk would have to hand me the phone to verify it was really me.

Business would routinely at the drop of a pin send me overseas. The bank would not approve the expenditures until I confirmed that yes I really was in Spain, France England or where ever.

If your bank or CC doesn't do this you need to find one that will.

Few years ago I received a call on a Sunday from my bank asking if I was in Hamburg Germany trying to buy a train ticket. Of course I was in my kitchen at the time. Transaction blocked, new card issued.

I got hit five times that year. I updated my computer to Win 10 and it found I had a nasty virus living it in someplace. Got that rooted out and all seems to be well.
