Went to the gunshow yesterday carrying a Mdl 29 that I wanted to trade for a Mdl 57. Walked thru the door, paused, and started on the left. Got to the other side of the building over an hour later. Dealer wanted to see the 29, drooledon it, asked me what I wanted. told hi, he went deer in the headlights. Had not even 30 minutes earlier sold a 57 in the presentation case. DANGGIT!!!! Just my luck, the only 57 in the whole building.
Swung by Cabelas to check on a 57 they had. Took 15 minutes to get in the door while the clerks tried to figure out the H&R 949 I had and another 30 minutes to get their used gun guy to wait on me. The 57 they had was a shooter, maybe 85%. Had it marked $799. Guy offered me $500 for my gun and $50 off the 57. Yea........right. I understand bidness, but not rape.
And that's how my saturday went.

I would have taken that deal, IF you were trading off a H&R 949.

I would not get rid of a Model 29 S&W for any reason, especially if it has a 4 inch barrel.

He offered me $100 for the 99%+ 949. He had a BEATER 949 in the display case marked $249. Really wasn't interested in trading the 949 to him, just wasn't gonna leave it in the truck.
Yes, it is a 4" 29, '62 DOM. Doesn't have the original stocks, but the metal is in awesome condition. The fella at the gunshow who knew more about Smiths than me said it was worth 650+ and not to take a dime less.
I got the 29 in a trade and I really don't have much in it. Like the gun, but honestly can't shoot it as well as I would like (the gun shoots better than me). But I'm surely not gonna let it go for what the Cabela's guy offered in a trade. I want a 57, but not that bad.

At $650 or therebouts, it is a fairly good deal. I bought two of them for $550 each from dealers up this way but both came with box, papers and grips and were like new. Have seen them for as much as $725 asking price. A local attorney keeps trying to buy one of mine and offered $700 for one but I buy and do not sell.

tough luck buddy! just remember, you never know what kinda deal might be waiting around the corner. be patient:)

You right, Mr magnum. It's a hobby for me. No need to sell to keep the lights on. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be in the right place at the right time.

If I was wanting to, what would be the proper factory grips for this gun?

How was the show??? I spent the weekend tearing out the bathroom floor. If I don't go down to Ft. Landerdale-I plan on going to the Lafayette show at the Heyman August 13-14

i believe that they should be oversized walnut target stocks, but you may want to wait for someone who was there and known. i'm just goin with what little info that the book gives. somebody will chime in.

I started to go to the Gonzales show but talked myself out of it because some recent purchases have lowered my play money pile. My brother Louisiana Joe was there. He's got more money than me and will be coming up here next week for the Hattiesburg show and fine cuisine, tasty adult beverages, and maybe a little range time if we can stand the heat. The 29 vs. 57 trade shouldn't be too hard to pull off. Start by asking here and then have some patience.

I actually had fun at this one. Dealers seemed ready to deal. Lots of nice guns there. Was seriously eyeballing a Ruger No.1 in 25-06.
Give me a shout before the Laffeytte show and I'll ride along and let you buy me lunch.

Mr. Mag, I ALMOST bought a some stocks, but didn't. Now I'm kicking myself. They were in VG condition and the guy had'em marked $39.99, DOH!!!!

no such thing as too many grips. especially not s&w factory ones. they only appreciate.

About how many vendors are at the Lafayette show? I might want to drive dow for it if there is enough vendors to make it worth my while. Went to a show in Monroe a while back. They had at least 20 vendors there and those guys may have had 140 guns total. But there were a lot of accessories there.
