Default My S&W FBI Performance Center 1076 and FBI 10mm Selection/Testing Documentation

Where to begin...my father was a Special Agent in the FBI for almost 27 years before his premature passing at the age of 52. This Saturday would have been his 66th birthday so in his honor I share this with you.

He joined the Bureau while Hoover still ran the show and was as old school as they came. He was officially part of the KMA Club at the time of his passing. He worked in South FL in the 70's and the early half of the 80's. He fought the drug trade before a contract forced our family's move to Memphis. In the FBI, he was a Firearm's Instructor, Defensive Tactics and Street Survival Instructor as well as a Pilot in Command. He was sent to Mexico and Russia to teach there as well. I even got to play with simunition from time to time with my friends. He also served a short stint in the SOG after a long undercover operation based in Memphis.

This was my father's last service pistol with the Bureau. He loved this gun and the firepower it gave him even if he did carry it sometimes in a terrible, touristy, blue fanny pack. My father was friends with Ben Grogan, one of the agents who was shot in the infamous shootout in Miami in 1986. I have the bookmark in my father's Bible from Grogan's funeral, one that most associate with the Bureau's search for the right round with which to arm their agents. That round was the 10mm and that gun was the S&W Model 1076

Here are the pictures of the gun, the S&W Performance Center case, specific documentation related to the FBI issuing of the gun as well as the documentation of the FBI's testing of the different caliber rounds that led them to choose the 10mm. I hope you enjoy...

The gun itself

***DISCLAIMER - My apologies for the duplication as this is my first thread I have started!***

We appreciate you sharing this stuff with us and we also appreciate your fathers service to our country. It would be great to see some of the information inside these books you have as well as the rounds inside the box.

First, Thank you. Second, I would be more than happy to share. The info in the books contains testing from different ammunition manufacturers across a spectrum of rounds from the 9mm, .45ACP, .40S&W, .38 Special, .357 Magnum and 10mm.

My dad had given these to his (and my) personal friend/gunsmith who processed the purchase of his sidearm through his FFL. I visited with him last weekend and he gave them to me along several boxes of original ammunition my father had given him. He knew the meaning they would have to me. He is an amazing man and if any of you have any interest in collecting military ordinance, his website is Slick Rick's Ord Hut

The documentation has been shipped back to me, however, I will not have access to the ammunition as I left it with him as I was leaving the country for business and I don't want to get that friendly with TSA. With their new slogan of "Can't see London, Can't see France, unless we see in your underpants" anything past standard security wasn't on my to do list. I am going back and will be picking it up in April.

It will be difficult to post all the documentation on here as the books of the testing data are quite extensive and lengthy. If you are interested after I give you a preview I will see what I can do about reproducing them and sending them your way

Thank you again for your kind words and allowing me to keep his memory and legacy alive

Sounds good. I think the things that would be of most interest to people would be how they taught agents to fire these guns most effectively and what types of results they got out of different types of ammunition. This info will be worth the wait so you'll have to let us know when your return to the states.

Will do. There is a lot of homework for me to do. I just got back to the States and the books are en route to me. Should have up sometime next week. Like I said, if you like the sample info I put up and want complete copies I will see what I can do about reproducing them

Great post. I feel as if I knew your father although I never met him. I was working in South Miami in 1986 when the shoot out went down. I was there with a team closing down a corrupt bank. After 30 years with the Feds, I became a member of the KMA club and only lasted four months longer before pulling the KMA rip cord. During my last 18 months, I was assigned to assist the DOJ as a forensic examiner on a bank fraud case. I worked with three terrific special agents. One was "old school" as you put it. So was I. He exemplified the excellent reputation that the FBI special agent was known for at that time. He was one of the last hold outs with a S&W 1076. That put me on the quest for one which I finally acquired last year. One sold me a FBI 50th Anniversary 357 Magnum. It was a great way to wind up a career. I would greatly appreciate getting copies of the documents you have for the 1076 and would gladly pay the costs. I know you miss your father, but so does the FBI, they just don't realize it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing, what a great post. DOJ loved those weapon record books, we were issued 1 with our Beretta 96D's when we got the guns.

Your dad sounds like a heck of a man and agent, and I thank you for his service to our country. I was in the BP when the shoot out happened in Miami and remember it well, good men taken before their time.

Take care...

Gentlemen, I can't thank you enough for your kind words. They mean a whole lot to me and certainly know he is looking down and appreciates it too. He was my hero and his legacy will live on through me. Sharing and telling stories helps keep it alive all the more. If any of you met or knew him I would love to hear about it. He was brought back to Quantico to teach quite often and was offered multiple positions to instruct across the different courses but my mom and sister refused to move. I personally wanted to but I can say I have eaten at the deli in Hogan's Alley, saw the Gone with the Wind poster in front of the theater, played with the FATS system, and had lunch with Louis Freeh in his office at the Hoover building. He was the only appointment of Clinton's my dad approved of and loved the fact he was an Agent and could relate to them. My dad turned down the ASAC position in Charleston, SC and spurned the promotion because he couldn't handle the politics. He described his job as playing cowboys and indians and getting paid for it. Remember though he started down in South FL so he cut his teeth during the days of the cocaine cowboys.

I am glad I could contribute and look forward to doing more around here. I will be happy to publish some of the info, and for those of you interested further and would like copies of those books, if you cover my printing and shipping cost I will be happy to send them your way.

There is a safe full of other guns, but they are all in long term storage prepared by his gunsmith. I will be slowly taking them out and bringing them back to life. The second one I took out, which is the 50th Anniversary S&W Model 27-3. Was just cleaned up and returned. This is a quick picture but will take more in the special wood case with the blue velvet lining when I head home next weekend.

Also, here is a picture of the plaque presented to my family after his passing with his picture on his credentials, a picture of him with his 10mm on his side and his HK MP5 10mm in hand and a picture of his wings.

Plaque presented by the Bureau at my dad's funeral/ceremony for his service - Those are his credentials

My dad with both of his 10mm's - This was in 1996 a year before his passing when he was on the Violent Crimes Task Force and 2 weeks before he was involved in a shootout with a murderer/rapist

Thank you guys again and hope you enjoy these too!

That he certainly did. He, as I do, have very broad, wide hands with normal fingers so in order to be as fast as possible on his reloading he had it switched and operated it with his trigger finger

Gentlemen,

I will have the requested reading material by next Thursday. I will post pictures of some samples then. Those interested can let me know and if enough interest I will look into the cost of replicating whichever ones you would like.

I just got 1,500 10mm rounds delivered so I will be busy this weekend!

Ian

Gentlemen,

I have finally been in town long enough to get to these and post some samples of the data. I have shown pictures of the 1990 and 1992 Ammunition test results performed by the FBI as well as their Hydrashok testing. The testing was performed by round (10mm, 9mm, .45ACP, .38 Special, .40 S&W, .357 Magnum) and by manufacturer (Federal etc...). I am also in possession of my father's Firearms Instructors Manual. I will be taking them to FedEx Office to try and find out how much to make copies and ship should you like. There are 4 books/manuals/findings in total. Please let me know if interested so I can know whether it is worth the trip or not.
