Had a shock this week when I got the bill for the annual maintenance on our Culligan water softener system. We've had it for ten years or so and are very pleased with its performance. Our well water is very good, but the minerals in it were making it very 'hard' and leaving calcium stains on our faucets and drains. We noticed the improvement it made right away, making showering and baths more enjoyable and more efficient. We've opted for annual service. They change the filter, reset the auto-purge and the control box, flush the system, and test the water. It takes the technician about half-an-hour. Most times, the bill has been a hundred-and-some dollars. Last year, for the first trime, it was two hundred-and-some. This year's bill was over $400! The tech said there were no problems and everything was normal. He also mentioned the maintenance scheduler was supposed to have told us there was a price increase. She didn't. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Culligan? I'm going to contact the local plumbing and heating place that services our heating system and generator to see if they can do the maintenance on the Culligan - and give us a cost estimate!

Most of central and West Texas water sources have very hard water, in the range of 15-20 grains/gallon. "Hard" water is considered to start at about 10 grains/gallon. Some areas of West Texas are somewhat worse, more like 30. This is because the aquifers are all limestone formations. When we first moved to Texas (West Texas), in our first home we got royally raped on a water softener repair, and I vowed to never own another water softener again. And I never have. We have done just fine without a water softener since around 1980, do not miss it at all. Just another useless nuisance I do not need. About all we do to hard water is put a tablespoon of Citric acid into the dishwasher every time it runs. Citric acid is cheap, and prevents water spotting of dishes and glassware. A product called Lemi-Shine is sold for that use in supermarkets, it is just Citric acid. Far cheaper to buy Citric acid in bulk off eBay. Also works to clean fired brass.

Water softener and water heater services have become stupid expensive here, too. Nobody wants to say why, but I suspect it is because people are not buying new units, so the maintenance charges have been kicked up to maintain cashflow.

Problem is the US Dollar is just not worth much these days. Just about every service has jacked up their charges to cover the increase of products they buy to service everything…..Vicious circle, just thank dc………

the plumbing company that installed our water softener services it if it acts up. They have never charged over $100.00.
