Bought the wrong ammo

Dang it! Tried to by some 357 mag defensive loads and ended up with 357 SIG loads. Didn't help that they were Sig sauer brand so the SIG right after the 357 didn't really stand out.

And of course they would not take them back. Mad at myself and mad at the store for telling me that there was a federal law against taking ammo back. I can find nothing about a federal law.

Federal law? Not that I know of, but with things as they are, I don't blame a store for not taking back a box that could have been tampered with.

Take them to your range next time. I always see people who are buying a box to get through the day without making a store run.

I'm told it is a state law and have never heard of any shop that will take ammo back ( or accept ammo with a trade). It makes good sense. The liability of taking ammo (new or old) into a shop from a non controlled and insured source and then reselling it is enormous.
That said, I feel your pain as I've been there myself and have seen it happen to others too.

p.s. On the bright side, you now have an excuse to get something chambered in 357 sig.

Every LGS I frequent has at least one sign:
ALL AMMO SALES ARE FINAL, NO EXCHANGES, NO RETURNS
I'm told it's an industry-insurance-legal-liability.

Keep them with you when you go shooting. Put some "feelers" out among shooters you know, and other folks at the range. You'll probably be able to at least work out a trade.

I worked about 12 years part time at a large LGS.
Don't know about federal law,, but it was a store policy, no returns on ammo.

I jumped all over .38 at Wally World that scanned at a stupid low price. Fortunately for me, they only had one box. It turned out I'd bought Super rather than Special. I eventually found a seller that took it from me at a Gun show, with a couple bucks towards a box of 9mm.

Shouldn't be too difficult to find someone at your local club or range who will take those .357SIG cartridges off your hands. Just one of life's little learning experiences.

I occasionally buy ammo at estate auctions, typically mixed lots.

I keep what I want and sell the rest to my LGS. This is a long standing arrangement.

Now that I think back, I had more than one episode. I bought a lot of HP ammo from a guy on a local forum. It was all 9mm with one box of 357Sig so I spoke up for the 9mm only. When I went to pick it up, he threw in the one box I couldn't use.

I ended up trading it for a fresh bear claw to @SigFan on this forum. Not sure who got the better deal.

If you happen to be a reloader and shoot 40.. you could shoot them out of the 40 and they should neck up so you can resize as 40..

They sure wouldn't be very accurate...

sounds like a good reason to get a gun in .357 sig to me. I've bought the wrong ammo before and either traded it or just stashed it away in the closet.

Had a friend who was sold 9x18mm for his PPK. Counter guy recommended it for his gun! Never asked if he ever found a buyer. Two boxes of cheap Russian **** is hardly enough reason to get a Makarov or CZ-82.

I had another officer buy two boxes of 45 GAP instead of ACP. I traded him 45 ACP and shot the Gap in my S&W 625.

Not a problem, go to your local source for recycled LEO guns and pick up a Glock 23 for $250 - 280 and get a Lone Wolf conversion barrel for $99.
Then get a 9mm conversion barrel for $99 and the Glock .22 Conversion kit for $330. This allows you to shoot all common pistol calibers for little money.

I have shot .38 Super in a S&W M19. It went bang and put a hole in the target. Larry
