I’m new. I just bought a new SW shield ez due to
Hand issues.
With ammo so hard to find for this gun , I found federal premium tactical center fire ammo. What do you think of this?
Just do you know, I am in rural Minnesota and it’s not easy to find.

What brand is the best for this gun?
I suppose if it does not like the federal ammo it wi let me know
Thanks! Tammy

Welcome. :)

Sometimes you just have to do the best you can with what you can get, especially now.

Federal ammo is good quality. Your description is kind of vague. Is it labeled HST? Does it say what weight the bullets are? Probably either 115, 124, or 147 grain. I think there's a HST version with a 150 grain bullet.

Defensive ammo can be picky in some guns. The only way to know is to run them through your gun. There really isn't a "best" brand or ammo type. Some guns may have a preference for one or another, or it may shoot them all equally well.

As a general rule, the best, most proven self defense ammo is Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Winchester Ranger. There are plenty of other good ones, but those three are all well-proven loads.

Please make use of the search function. There have been plenty of discussions about ammo recommendations that could be useful to you.

Also, if you are new to guns, I would highly recommend you seek out training at your earliest convenience. It will give you a good base on which to build.

Hope that helps.

Caliber? Not all of us know everything. :o

Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of good info here. Would help to know if you have the .380 or the 9mm. Best guidance is to get trained. Good luck and hope you will eventually find more ammo.

Welcome to the forum.

I have found Federal Premium ammunition to be top-notch.
It is the self-defense load in all my firearms. For 9mm, I use their HST 147gr loading in 50 round boxes, P9HST2.

Welcome to the S&W Forums. Federal Premium Tactical HST ammo is really good stuff for self defense. It is my prefered ammo, but Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Ranger T are also proven designs.

And a...

And a Hound Dawg Howdy to from SC!:)

For practice, find some cheaper full metal jacket bullets or plated. Defense ammo is very expensive (and scarce right now)

But whatever defense ammo you choose, you'll need to practice some with it and check that it functions in your gun.

Good luck!

PS My favorites are Federal HSTs, Speer Gold Dots and Remington Golden Sabers.
