On a recent purchase of Federal 10mm Auto from Midway, I opened the box and found that they seem to use small pistol primers.

I compared them (visually) to some 10mm ammo that I have and the primers are definitely smaller that on the other stuff I have.

Has anyone else encountered something like this?

10 MM has been loaded with both large and small primers for several years. Depends on manufacturer. Sig uses large primers.

Federal started using small pistol primers in 10mm Auto and 45 ACP with their line of non-toxic ammo, the case head stamp actually contained the letters "NT". I guess it was when CCI Speer and Federal merged that Federal and Speer went to small pistol primers for all 10mm Auto and 45 ACP loads.

OK guys; thanks for the help. I handload, so I'll have to watch the primer size.

That may have been when they changed to a different primer or bullet type; the original 10mm NT with the stranded zinc projectiles had large primers.

Yep

I've found a dozen or so SPP in 10mm and 45acp brass that's been donated to me by shooting buddies that don't reload.

FYI

This is Federal's response to an email I sent them asking about this.

We manufacture them with small pistol primers.

[Mr. Spock voice on] Fascinating. [Mr. Spock voice off]. I assumed Federal made the switch to SP with all of their non-toxic ammo. I guess, at least with the 10mm Auto, that switch came a little later in production. That is what happens when I assume, emphasis on the first three letters. :o
