Hey guys, i recently aquired a galco speed paddle for my 642, needed something for quick on and off as i am not allowed to carry at work so i have to disarm in my car. Well this thing is not going to be a concealable holster for me. Imo it sticks out too far. But the last 2 days i have carried open appendix carry, and it is comfortable!!!! Especially while driving. It is also comforting as it feels "right" its in front of me so i dont have to worry about someone sneaking up behind me and going for my gun. I can also draw faster this way than my usual 3:30-4:00 under a shirt carry. I have experienced no open remarks about it except when picking my daughter up from school, teacher said you aren't supposed ti have guns at school, i very politely replied mam georgia law allows me to while picking up or dropping off. Georgia is an open carry state but i have rarely seen people open carry around here, but it sure is comfy & convenient

Your manners probably avoided a phone call or visit by police - good judgement.

I had the same problem with a Blade-Tech paddle attachment on my Blade-Tech Revolution (kydex) holster - just causes the grip butt to stick out.

I thought a decent leather pancake might work better but have not tried one yet. I have an AlienGear for IWB and it works very well...just a little difficult to put on and take off. Shouldn't be a big concern as I wouldn't expect to put it on and take it off but once or twice a day max.

I'm still trying to find a way to use a left handed shell so the attachment screw inserts are on the right side of the shell to add my own clip. Then use it for IWB. So the IWB and OWB would just be mirror images with the belt clip on the proper side of the shell.

I'm trying to get mine closer to the body and more compact than the normal Hybrids and the same brand shell for both IWB and OWB.

How does your daughter feel about fielding questions at school about why her father carries a gun to school?

You seriously worry about someone sneaking up and going for your gun?

You worry too much about other people. Keep it covered and no one will notice. We tend to think we stick out when we carry. We don't if it's concealed. We do if it's open.

I find OC much more convenient and comfortable. While I've had one or two dirty looks from some old Fudds, most people are very supportive, inquisitive or just think I'm another cop (even cops think I'm a cop, go figure).

BTW, unlike FL, you're two other neighboring states are OC: both TN and AL.

Good luck!

My personal feeling is that OC'ing a handgun is inviting trouble. Nobody needs to know you are carrying a gun on your person. LEO's and others with authority will feel a need to confront you, others with evil intentions will target you.

GA law may allow a firearm in your vehicle when dropping off/picking up children, but how about if you leave the vehicle? If you are covered, will the school resource officer, or any officer called on site by a concerned parent or child with a cell phone, fully understand the law? A school yard is no place for a confrontation with a LEO, your "rights" will be put aside when it comes to the safety of those children. You have already brought unnecessary attention to yourself by not choosing to be discreet.

This was not meant to be a flame, just my thoughts. You may live in a rural area, and things might be different. Here in metro Atlanta it is a bad idea.

I don't open carry much any more but I did for a few years and didn't really experience any of that. Do you have data is this just an opinion?

In response to w.e.g. my daughter is 6 so really don't think thise questions are going to come up. And fyi i did not enter the school to pick my daughter up, she is a car rider we drive up the teacher opens the door of the car and buckles the child into their seat as my daughter rides in front the teacher saw my gun in my holster on my person. No big deal. I don't "worry" someone would sneak up and disarm me but since this particular holster sticks out from the body farther than any i have used before i feel more comfortable with it in front of me, & the chance of being disarmed has to be drastically reduced with your gun in front of you. I have never understood why people think oc will attract criminals unless there is an actual statistic with rock solid proof i have to call bull on that imo most criminals look for helpless victims not a guy who is in good shape and has a gun where he can get to it fast.

It's not that it will attract criminals. But, think like a bad guy for a moment. If you're going into a place to shoot some people, who are you going to shoot first? The guy with the gun. If you open carry, you become that target.

I'm not trying to convince you not to open carry. Just be aware of the possible complications involved.

Most LEO's are required to wear holsters with retention devices because of scuffles with criminals. Lots of cops are guys, and gals, in good shape and have a gun where they can get to it fast.

I can understand that logic, also i believe it is more likely that a criminal would be looking to rob someone or someplace or shoot someone they know that done something to them than to decide i'm going to go to such and such place and shoot a bunch of people, not saying that it's not a possibility just that it's a small chance.

I will still carry concealed most of the time, just the on and off to and from work it's so much easier this way and i don't have to take my belt halfway off to disarm. A snap style holster would be perfect for me in my situation but the paddle is better than my other options af the moment. And oc wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, i was thinking i would get crazy looks and people saying something to me and that didn't happen, and it's more comfortable especially while driving. So for now i believe i will carry this way to and from work and concealed all other times

I use to OC all the time. I still do some of the time. Never, have I "invited trouble" by doing so nor experienced any trouble while OC'ing. And it's never been an issue with LEO's; never been confronted by LEO or evil doers.

How does your daughter feel about fielding questions at school about why her father carries a gun to school?

Do you mean practicing your Constitutional Right and having her explain it to her classmates versus being PC and letting the anti-gun duds intimidate her and you?

Seems like a pretty simple answer how to handle it. Educate her and give the kids a different view than a "PC" teacher.

I do not open carry, but I'm not against it for others. It's their right as long as it's not purposely antagonistic.

Most LEO's are fully aware of gun laws and they have civil suits for those who aren't. I can tell you from experience there's nothing like a good civil suit to impress the point to the mayor and city council. They then make it a point to impress it upon the Chief....pretty soon everyone's on one big happy page.

For example it only took about 36 hours after a suit was filed for everyone in my department to comprehend you don't run code 3 with just your lights on and no sirens. At least not unless it a domestic etc and even then you cut them off a couple blocks away vs running 5 miles without the siren on.

Maybe they cant sneak up behind you and grab it from the holster but if they really want it they most likely will sneak up behind you with a baseball bat.

A civil suit isn't going to do a dead fellow much good, though his family may benefit from it. I stated my personal feelings about open carrying, and I have seen more than one confrontation where it was a problem. Everybody feel free to do as they like. I prefer to conceal my handguns.

If you have links showing where a person legally OCing was killed by L.E. for no reason other than legally OCing. I'd love to see them.

I'm not trying to bust your walnuts personally, I just get tired of the LE is going to confront every OCing person urban myth. It gets old.
