Although I have a few pocket holsters, some are a bit large (DeSantis) and some are prone to move about a bit in my pocket (Remora). I think I want one of the Uncle Mike's, but not sure for a 642 if I should get a size 3 or a 4. Anyone use one of these holsters?

I recalled someone on this forum stating something about buying one size larger, but couldn't remember if it was for an Uncle Mikes or another brand. The size 3 just looked small.

The size three is fine. I used a succession of them for fifteen years--a couple eventually got threadbare, but still worked.

I still alternate one with a Nemesis, depending on the pants pocket du jour.

Both holsters are great bargains.

Size 3 is perfect, especially with jeans and shorts. The Nemesis is better with dress and casual slacks with somewhat larger front pockets.

To the OP:

I've used the #3 with J-frames and it worked well enough with a coat pocket. I didn't experience too many issues with the holster coming out of my pocket during presentations, and the holster remained relatively stable and upright in carry. If you were wondering how much of the revolver is exposed, everything from the rear of the cylinder and trigger guard back sits outside of the holster. Truth be told though, I'd go with something more along the lines of a Bianchi Pocket Piece before I'd look at Uncle Mikes.

#3 for 5-shot revolvers. Why was that so hard to figure out?

Hey, now. Be nice. Sometimes the devil is in the details.

Thanks for the input. I went back to the store and tried my 642 in a #3 Uncle Mike's, and wasn't overly impressed. They didn't have a #4 so I couldn't compare it. I ended up ordering a Galco Horsehide which seems more versatile. Its much more expensive than the Uncle Mike's but my experience is that Galco makes a quality product that can last a lifetime. I also already have a DeSantis Nemesis. I guess I am quickly moving toward having a drawer full of different holsters, so that I can carry any of my three carry guns IWB, OWB and pocket carry. I see how this holster thing can get expensive really quickly. (For IWB, I really like my N8 Tactical.)

I find the #4 fits my j-frames much better than the #3 but I think it's largely a matter of personal preference.

I also use a Galco horsehide model that I really like, but in fact I find the #4 to be more versatile.

Good luck w your choice, they're cheap so ya can't go too wrong. :)

Vito,

Sounds like you made a wise choice. Hope the Galco works well for your needs.

Oh, and don't feel bad. I've yet to find "the one" holster for any of my sidearms, myself. :o

I only feel "bad" about holsters when I count up the various holsters of different types and sizes that I keep together in a drawer and avoid figuring out how much I have spent and how few of these actually get used. Sort of like guns. I don't have a lot of guns, but when I really think about it I could do fine with just three handguns: my 642 for carry, my 19 for home protection and my 617 for target shooting. But over the years I have bought and kept more than those three. And at least holsters are not nearly as costly as guns themselves. I don't even want to think about the reloading set up I bought and have never even used!

I like the Uncle Mike's #36 for 95% of my 642 carry needs. Although it's really an IWB, it fits in slacks and shorts pockets, cargo pockets, vest and jacket pockets...just about anywhere. They're relatively cheap, but they do wear quickly and get threadbare. But like I said, cheap and easy to replace. I also have a Galco horsehide, but that's a little bulkier and a lot stiffer. I sometimes use a Malabar Gunleather bullhide square pocket holster- works well, especially in those square cargo pockets.

I have an Uncle Mikes #2 that I believe is for a 5"1911. Well, it works very well with 2", 3", 4" K frame and my 642. I find I use it more than any other In Side Waist Band holster I have. Yes, it is not made specifically for the short revolvers or the little J frame, but it holds them all well and a benefit, at lest for me is it allows the guns to ride deeper below the waist band and print less or not at all. Also, the longer length of the holster , being deeper inside the pants, is less likely to work upward or tip outward.
