Default Concealed weapon Badge

How many actual LEOs active or retired think showing a Concealed Carry Permit badge if involved in any kind of defense shooting is a good idea.

The Police are going to ask to see your concealed carry permit if you ever get involved with them while carrying. I don't know what the purpose of carrying a badge would be.

Here in Ky, it's called a "Concealed Deadly Weapons Permit". We don't need no stinking badges!

LOL....NO!

That said..... a few summers back ran into a few "plainclothes' officers from the next Burb over (over the course of the summer) at a local Sheetz's ...... khakis and navy blue Polo shirts..... open carry with their badge on their belt in front of their holster (gun, badge, spare mag).. NO one gave them a second look ....... but no one could "read" the badge.

Look the part and folks just "give it the benefit of the doubt".

Might have bought the good Samaritan in the other thread.... a few much needed seconds?????????

Got my Dad's old badges Patrolman to Captain...... Our Twp. Chief gave me a Dept ball cap........guess he expects I might wear it????

Just wear an FBI wind breaker. But seriously, what's to keep the bad guys from carrying a concealed carry badge so the cops won't shoot them?

Displaying any kind of badge as a civilian creates the potential to be charged for impersonating a police officer, and will definitely put a CCW holder on the wrong foot when 'splaining things to the actual police when they arrive.

The absolute best way to communicate "I'm not a threat" is to have empty hands, be calm, and comply with all commands when contacted by LE.

Bad Idea, great way to be charged with impersonating an officer.
That's just my honest opinion, the opinion of the prosecutor in your area may differ..

Can anyone name one good reason for carrying or displaying one? (Other than mall cop wannabe's?)

Anyone wanting to carry a badge needs to be a cop. Or UNIFORMED security. To me and YMMV, someone who carries a gun and wants to wear a badge is making it clear that they want trouble or unearned prestige.

I don't carry my retirement badge or ID. I also just pay my traffic tickets and tell the officer who writes those, "Thank you" without telling him/her how important I used to be.

So, how is it displayed?

On the belt? If your gun/holster is concealed the badge is concealed too and responders to your shooting won’t see it.

On a neck chain? Are you really going to walk around all day every day with a toy badge around your neck? If its under your shirt its gonna get old fast. If its outside your shirt you’re gonna look like a moron.

In a badge wallet? Holding up a shiny chunk of metal as the cops roar up is a singularly bad idea.

I had a real badge and I hardly ever carried it. When I retired they thoughtfully sunk it into a block of lucite. Maybe I should carry that around and lob it at the cavalry when they show up.

We all know concealed means hidden. Wearing or displaying a CCW badge
advertising you have the permit, and probably carrying a gun, wouldn't seem to make any sense.

We were required to wear ours on our belt next to our pistol, in case your shirt rode up and scared somebody. At least when they trapped mine in lucite, they added my five year increment service pins and a nice brass plaque. It’s pretty good sized. Too bulky to
lug around, but it would leave a mark if I chunked it at ya’ . . .

I have a miniature retired badge in a small badge wallet that I carry because it has my retired LEOSA ID, my state CCW, a couple business cards, and my emergency c-note. In 6 years, it has yet to be displayed to anyone, but I don’t want any confusion if I ever have to actually show it. . .

I have never used a badge in a non-official capacity to show somebody else how important I was or used to be, and I don’t really like those who do . . .

I have my badges and my Dad’s. Not for display. I do occasionally show a photocopy of my last ID to my friends. Mostly so they can see that I used to have hair, and we all get a laugh out of my 70’s era movie star mustache. It went well with my bell bottom pants and Miami Vice shoulder holster.

The state of Kansas issued me a CCW badge when I was a licensed PI. I can't see much use for them other than that or for bona fide security people.

A Concealed Carry badge sounds like a plastic Junior G-Man badge when we were eight years old.

It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. If it were any good, it would be issued along with your permit. No county or state I'm aware of issues more than a card as a permit to carry a concealed weapon, so anything else is worthless.

With the majority here - a CCW badge is a bad idea - period. It makes you look like a “hot dog” - someone that has a permit for the “wow” factor rather then the intended purpose and showing a badge to anyone will give them the impression that some enforcement authority is attached to it and then you are impersonating.

I carry my retired creds for LEOSA and nothing more. But not the badge. That sits in my safe with my other badges that I wore as a cop.

This is completely off subject, sort of, but here goes. As a residential contractor, I do a lot of framing and trim carpentry. Often, I will cut a board and fit it into place and it will stay in place without nails because the fit is tight. At that point I will look at my helper and say "Nails, we don't need no stinkin nails!" My helper laughs and asked where the saying came from. I heard the "badges" phrase on Blazing Saddles but did not know it was so famous.

Bad idea.
Makes you look like a police wannabee to the police and anyone else who is close enough to actually read it.

I thought you got them in a box of sugar corn flakes.
Didn't know that people paid money for them.
I have heard of bicyclists putting the word "POLITE" on the back of their jerseys in block letters, hoping they would get more respect from drivers. Our eyes see what we are expecting to see.

Rick

I would bet that 99% of NYPD cops carry duplicate shields. They were referred to as “dupes”. This way your real shield stayed on your uniform and wasn’t in danger of being lost and the cop getting a 30 day rip. So I still have my dupe, but it sits in a safe and will never be carried.

I do carry my ID card that is stamped Retired. I keep it behind my license. When I am pulled over (very rarely) I say nothing and hand the ID card over with my paperwork. Cops have discretion when writing and there is no reason not to give a break to a brother or sister officer. It has never failed to get me out of a ticket. By the way, I gave breaks to teachers, firefighters, doctors and nurses, and correctional officers, not to mention a big majority of people I pulled over. I made my quota with the real lowlifes, not another civil servant hustling to get to work.

I also keep my retired ID card in my wallet w/my LEOSA certification but have never shown it to anyone, not even the cop that pinched me for speeding. I was on the way to a family funeral and she took pity on me, just a warning. My retired badge sits in a safe to pass down to my kids one day.

So I just gotta ask...

When you are in a shooting situation as a civilian, exactly WHEN do you have the time to take that foolish badge out of your pocket and display it? When the police arrive, do you want them to see you also fishing around in your pockets at the same time?

If for some unfortunate reason I find myself holding a gun in public, my other hand sure won't be busy trying to pull a meaningless badge out of my pocket...

If a concealed weapons badge was a recognized means of identification for a CWP holder to show to the police, that would be one thing. But I personally have never heard of any place that does that, so it's really kind of useless.
I don't carry my retired badge either, just my ID. For one thing, it's an unusual shape that's not used in this state (Denver PD) so I think it would be more confusing than helpful. Even though I could get another, I'd rather not take the chance of loss or damage, so I leave it home.

Cool! I've been licensed to carry for seven years, but I've had my badge for seventy years. I think I'll start carrying it now. Everyone will be so impressed!

And after I've had it for eighty years, I can upgrade it to a Senior Ranger Badge.

NYPD and LAPD for example don't issue officers additional badges and it is against agency policy for an officer to private order one last I checked. Where I've worked. You get issued two badges and you can private order your own too.

If you like the badges, you can accessorize with a CCW money clip and key fob!

It is against policy, but everybody does it. Bosses, too. The places that make them get around it by making them ever so slightly smaller. Not enough for the human eye to pick up. When you retire or get promoted so you get a new shield, you have to hand in the shield. You place it in a mold to verify it is the right one.

This topic has been discussed multiple times on this forum. I'm not aware of anyone ever saying it was a good idea. How many times are we going to have this discussion?
