In February 2011 I was in my LGS and watched a guy trade in this Sig P229 .40 S&W for a $300.00 value on a Kimber. While he was filling out his 4473, I waved four Benjamin's at the assistant manager. He handed me a 4473 to fill out and took my money. Now-a-days, that is less than a LE trade-in or a CPO would cost. $600.00 sounds good to me, and I like the .357 Sig cartridge.

You might check places like Bud's for comparable prices.

Sit Sauers are some of the best, if not the best, Cmbat handguns that you can get.

You can get a .40 caliber barrel, and swap it in, and use the same mags and everything.

That gun carries nice. .357 Sig and .40 S&W are a little snappy, but you have a concealable gun with good firepower.

Thanks I will talk to him - he wants to trade some dog training for it - so it really will only be out my time to train his very nice lab - and I figured I would put rosewood grips on it

I carry a P229 however in 40S&W caliber. It is IMO a reliable well made gun and $600 to me seems to be a fair price.

Yep, post a pic if you can. Sig sells replacement barrels in .40 and the mags are interchangeable. You can sell your 357 sig barrel and pretty much recoup most of the cost for the switch if you would rather have a .40
Also all 229 slides are milled stainless, so it's black it is Nitron coated stainless.
Does it have a rail in the frame?
The trade value of $600 is good for both parties and they are great pistols.

I have a Sig 40 S&W. I love it. My daughter called one evening and said she bought a Glock in 357 Sig. She loved it but ammo was hard to find and expensive. She now has a 40 that uses much cheaper ammo.

Sig P 229 in 357 sig is what the US Secret Service carries. It's a reliable gun and a great, but $, round. I'd be all over it for $600.

Thanks not really worried about the cost of shooting it - Have both a 45 ACP and 9 mm for shooting - once I get it (still dealing with him) I will shoot it to make sure it is on - maybe shoot a box of practice rounds and a box of what I will be carrying (Probably Federal HST) and call it good.

Maybe shoot a box every month thereafter - I may go with Cor-Bon or Underwood rounds too - I remember when it first came out it was supposed to replicate the 357 Mag round - but now they load it down considerably so it is not much more than a bottlenecked 38 Super

Picked a lightly used one up about 8years ago with both the .357sig and .40S&W..........w/ 4 magazines and night sights for about $500.

It's a safe queen but my only .357sig and .40....... last two panics the only ammo on the local shelves...... so nice to have one in reserve!

I found this to be true as well with mine.

I bought a used one from a pawn shop for $375 several years ago because no one wanted it due to the caliber. I didn't care at that price!

A couple years later and the ammo panic hits and what's the only ammo at Walmart and LGS? Yup, .357 Sig.

Everyone always yammers about how you should get a 9mm or .45 because "you can always get ammo". I get the idea, but that's also the first ammo to be bought up and horded. I could find .357 Sig through the whole panic. It wasn't cheap, but it was there.

I bought a Sig .40 barrel from a guy for $100. Just drop it in and it's a .40. The mags are the same.

I have a Sig P239 and a Sig P226 and both came in 40 S&W but I also have a 357 Sig barrel for both. I like the fact that I can change between the two calibers in each pistol. It takes almost no time to switch the barrels and I'm good to go as they use the same magazines for each caliber.

That's a good price. I bought a P229 DAK in .40 SW for a little less, but DAK actions are an acquired taste.

You can run 357 SIG through a .40 SW magazine, but not the other way around. Otherwise, all you need is a barrel change. I've used it, but 357 SIG is too rich for my pocketbook, and it's hard to reload and maintain the correct shoulder length.

You will enjoy it! That gun was built for that round! It shoots flat, fast and fun. That bottleneck design feeds like a dream as well. Stock up on ammo and have at it. As others mentioned, pick up a .40s&w barrel and use ball ammo for plinking and training, then switch back to the .357sig for carry purposes if ammo cost is a factor.

I've cycled through various guns and calibers for carry over the years - currently my duty pistol is a P229 in .357sig and my most often carried off duty is a P239 in the same.

Put in an SRT (short reset trigger) kit if you're not familiar with them. Fairly inexpensive and well worth it upgrade to the trigger I think.
