Anyone have a Redhawk in 45 colt? I'm thinking about a 4.2 inch Redhawk in 45acp/45 Colt---I can get one new.

I'm looking for a big bore handgun that can be both woods carry and also occasional EDC defense.

Can the Redhawk 45acp/Colt gun handle the Buffalo Bore +P stuff? I know the Redhawk manual prohibits 45 colt +P, but I constantly read about how the Redhawk can take 45 Colt loaded to magnum type velocities.

What are the real limitation of the gun? Is there anything the SAMMI spec 255 gr. wadcutter @ 950 ft/s can't take on?

thanks

I think the Redhawk can handle a lot, but any gun will see increased wear with hotter loads. My old Blackhawk 45 started getting a bit loose from magnum 45 Colt handloads. If I really needed magnum loads, I'd buy a 454 now. It would handle the standard 45 Colt loads as well as the hot 454 loads.

I can almost guarantee you'll never wear a ruger redhawk or super redhawk out. They're built like bank vaults and can handle the hottest loads with ease.

Only thing you have to worry about is dry firing. The cylinder is so heavy you can actually "peen" and wear out the cylinder stop grooves by pulling the trigger too fast. But even that happens rarely unless you dry fire it like a madman.

Buy the new one that takes .45 Colt or .45 ACP. Rave reviews on that gun and a great packable for woods carry and EDC.

The Ruger Redhawk 5032 is the 45 Colt/45acp version with a round butt. The wood grips that ship on the revolver are very nice looking but IMO rather small.I owned this revolver for a short time and sold it because there were zero 3rd party grips for the round butt. Also it's a bit more complex to disassemble/assemble than S&W 45 caliber revolvers. The gun is very heavy.

Ruger moon clip are expensive.

The Ruger Redhawk 5027 45 Colt has a square butt and ships with Hogue rubber. There's a lot of 3rd party grips.

If I wanted a Redhawk again, which I don't, I think I would get the 5027 45 Colt and have the cylinder cut for moon clips so 45acp can be used.
