1975 Ruger Security Six snubnose

Well it took several years but I finally found a decent Security Six with the 2.75" barrel. For me that' s a bonus because I like short barreled revolvers. Won it yesterday at an auction. When it was all said and done with I paid $541.80. It was an internet auction, but the auction company is only a few miles from my house so I was able to give it a thorough exam before the bidding began in earnest. I got in a bit of a bidding war for it. It's a 151 prefix and a serial number search shows it being made approximately 1975 (pre-billboard). Placed it next to my GP100 3" for the sake of comparison. You know people talk about certain Colts and Smith & wessons being hard to find, but I have had a heck of a time locating a nice Security Six...or a Police Six/Speed Six. This one took a few years. I've actually been saving up for one of the new Pythons, but I didn't want to let this one go so I dipped it into my savings. That's okay I can build it back up and eventually the 2020 Python will be around in large numbers (and hopefully they will have the teething issues fixed by then)…….unlike the Security Six.

I've got a 4" and have been watching for years to find a 2.75 to go with it. They just don't come up for sale around here.

SS snubs are great!!!
This is one I saw, by DH over at 1911, and the temptation to modify mine is always present.
Snubs at 100 plus yards are fun.

Will make some whitish grips and see if they can be made/carved to look like those.
Maybe just get sloppy with the ancient Marlin carving machine.

Kool tool and it can carve in reverse.

OP, I like snubs, too! Passed up a snub Speed- or Service-6 at the pro shop at my range a few months back. It was heavily used and the owner had it marked at $600+. Too much $ for that condition, I instead bought the new snub 627PC that had been languishing for months.

Not terribly impressed by the re-issuance (sorta) of the Python, I WOULD be impressed if Ruger would re-issue the stainless snub Speed- and/or Service-6. And I know this won't happen.

I paid $500 for this Speed Six 5 years ago - value hasn't changed substantially since then - I think you paid a fair price.

Good guns, not too long ago they could be had for very reasonable prices but I've noticed in the last 5 years prices have been steadily increasing.

Mine I bought for my Dad for being my best man. It’s the last gun he shot before he died. I wouldn’t sell it for any amount. Even without the sentimental value it’s still my favorite.

I think you got a good deal on yours. Great gun.

Had both a Security Six and a Speed Six in 2 3/4 form. Great guns, built like tanks, good actions, but I just did not shoot them much. Spending more time with my S&W's. So I sold them along with about half of my "accumulation" through a local auction house. Did very well overall.

Best thing found for the Security Six was NOS Ruger target grips which were on sale on the Ruger site for $20. Liked them so much that when they went on sale for $15 I bought two more. After I sold the two Six Series revolvers I put the all three sets of target grips on Ebay and got $180 for the three of them.

Nice one to find! Those Six Series Ruger double actions are some of my favorites.

A few years ago I paid $450.00 for a stainless Security Six 2.75 inch still in the box and folks said I was STUPID paying that much for a generic Ruger!

Checkman, congrat’s on your security six, your perseverance paid off. I put the snub security six / speed six in the same category as my 3” model 65, which IMO is one of best carry / SD revolvers ever made. I bought my first Security six in 75, been shooting it ever since. Your’s will serve you well. Now get you a bucketful of magnums and head for the range. Also agree on your take on the new Python’s, give them time to “iron out the wrinkles”.

Had a 4" blue Speed. Got it a few years ago for a good price. But my sister wanted a magnum so now she has it. I liked the gun but didn't shoot it much. Until recently, I had no idea how much they are going for now.

The word was that they cost too much to make and that Ruger never made a dime on them. They replaced them with the smaller SP101 and the larger GP100.

Word was Ruger never made a dime on them?

Fact is that they produced over 1.5 million of them over a 16 year production run (1972-1988) and Ruger still produces the Redhawk (1980 to present), which is an upsized Security Six with the added crane lock.

Ruger definitely made money on them. It was designed from the start to use investment castings that made them much more economical to produce than a S&W K frame, and the lower cost of production of the Six series more than offset their lower retail price.

The GP100 was an evolution of the Six series and the Redhawk, incorporating the crane lock. The GP100 also used a peg style grip frame which eliminates the distinction between round and square grip frames and also allows the revolver to accommodate grips that allow for a much wider range of hand sizes and trigger reaches. A GP100 can be made to fit anyone's hand. The same is not true for the Six Series, or the Redhawk (or for that matter the K/L and N frame S&W revolvers).

Style wise the GP100 also (stupidly, IMHO) followed the herd going to a Colt Python style full underlug barrel, as did S&W with the 686.

Price-wise, the Security-Six has turned into Ruger's Model 28-2. They languished more or less at the bottom of the price range until folks started to realize what a workhorse little gun they are. The ones to really look out for are the pre-warning guns...stainless or blued, those are the ones that are bringing top dollar now.

Mine is the Speed Six version in .38 Spl. The Stags are from Collins Craft grips, the holster is an AKJ Concealco (and has more wear now) and the grip adapter is an original Tyler.
Got it in practically new condition with box and papers about 2005 before the prices escalated. I never realized just how nice these are until I got this; as a plus the action and trigger pull is great on it.

I got one half started, but the Lady of the house needs to shop.

Copy of original, (but thicker by 1/8" per side), which I'll inlet/fit properly.
Bought that new around '79-'80 with a 45 Convertible Blackhawk.
