A gun show neighbor has an early version of the Bushmaster, Gwinn Arms marked, aluminum receiver. Not an IMP-221 (221 fireball ctg.), also known as the GUU-4/P, though the pre-86, select fire version would be nice. Out of the three semi-auto versions there seems to be 7 or 8 sub-variations, but I believe this one is very early. Hopefully we can get together soon so I can examine it closely. These things are not cheap so I need to educate myself as much as possible. I'm into classic S&W revolvers but I also like the unusual. This one definitely fills that bill. Will report.

Two things:1) I had a 223 version. The version I had the action would pivot in relation the pistol grip. The rear sight was a notch in a plate held to the back end and had 2 screws that provided some adjustment. The plate also had a long slit as a sling attachment. These were considered a pistol back in the 90's.

2) There was a world famous speed trap on the far west side of Columbus, called Rome. Back in the 80's there was a small gun shop on the first floor of the wheelchair bound owner's house. The first time I was in there, he was very gruff and offstandish. The day after I was there 2 men attempted to rob him at gun point! Under his lap blanket were 2 of the early Bushmaster bullpups, he basically cut the robbers in half! I was there about a week to 10 days later, he was in a great mood and glad to see me again. He had me look into repairing the inside of the front room wall. Two 30 round mags of 223 hollow points didn't stop inside the bodies at 10 to 15 feet! Since it was on the opposite side of town I told him I wasn't interested in making 4 to 5 trips to complete the repairs but was willing to do the repair and first coat of plaster for free!

Field Stripped

Caution! Don't listen to the U-tube video that I watched. This thing is much more intuitive than some people think. Complete disassembly would be another matter. Half M-16/AR-15, half...I don't know. Space gun?? Piston impingement w/no floating bolt carrier/ no hot gasses to gum up the works.

Bolt is AR with the extractor on the top, firing pin, same as, hammer is M-16. Some roll pins that I don't want to mess with. There are some things maybe not original. We'll see how it shoots. Will report.

Oh yea, no buffer tube.

Took it + PS-90 and Jovino'ed 25 for some excitement. I am happy to report this strange little gun performed flawlessly. Aiming is somewhat strained, but once you master the hip shooting style for it, it puts them right in there. No target pistol, but it does it's original mission of pilot survival weapon just fine. Recoil was mild (.223), and as expected it was pretty loud. The Smith Enterprise flash eliminator also did an excellent job.

If you like to draw a crowd just pull out one of these. I'm not into drawing attention, but inquiring minds want to know. What is that thing?
