hopefully this won't start some kind of holy war here but if you want a home defense weapon, i don't think in AR is the right tool. your m&p .40 is all you should need. if you want to add a long gun, i prefer a cheap remington 870 pump with OO buck. the 870 is cheap, reliable and anyone in your house will likely head for the door when the hear you pump a round into the chamber.
if you haven't been schooled on clearing a house with an AR you're just asking for trouble, imho. it's difficult to manuever through doors and hallways with a long gun (870 included). a pistol that you are very comfortable with is probably the easiest way to go.
having said all that, what are you intending on shooting? a standard AR is .223, not the most versatile hunting caliber unless you only shoot prairie dogs at long range. too much power for small game at close range unless you don't plan on eating your quarry. if you don't plan on target shooting at over 100 yards then the 15-22 is probably the way to go. it's tons of fun, cheap to shoot, awesomely customizable and did i mention it's fun? it's easy for me to say all this as i have an AR and a 15-22 but i've already put more rounds through my 15-22 in two months than my AR in 10 years.
if you go 15-22, get one with a factory flash hider. hopefully some of the fixes the "older" models have needed have been fixed in the newly shipped rifles.
good luck and let us know what you decide.

+1 for the shotgun. My # 1 home defense weapon is my mossberg persuader w/ 00 buck. I like the ak in a situation ( god help us ) like a natural disaster siege thing where you might be going outside. Did I mention I hope these things never happen.
i shoot the 15-22 more because its cheaper and easier to find a place to shoot. i'm not going to bang away my AR at $.40 per round at a target 25 yards away. on the other hand, i can unload 500 rounds of .22lr at 25 yards for less than the price of 50 .223.
regarding intimidation in your home, the huge barrel of a shotgun would be more intimidating to me than an AR. i know if you hit me with OO buck i'm getting multiple holes in my chest vs. one with your AR. either way it's a bad day. one other thought, a shotgun fired in the home may not pass through walls potentially injuring someone else. a .223 will pass through walls easily.
jager bombs? it's only 7:30 on the east coast.![]()
My HD is my Mossberg 500 with a fe mods. I think the Shotgun is more scary than an AR with 00 buck or an HP Slug.
My 9mm is my 2nd.
Everything else is for fun and SHTF.![]()
Just to solidify the point an AR-15 is not a good home defense weapon. I have two but they would probably be my last choice in a firearm if I heard a door opening at 2 AM. The AR is a good ( not great ) long range weapon, 100 plus yards, and although I'm not a hunter, I am told a capable hunting rifle. I personally prefer a handgun, this is my 28th year as an LEO, and would be hesitant to even grab a long shotgun in close quarter defense, but that would be IMHO better than an AR. A handgun can be drawn close to that body and can clear a room admirably. Burglars do not want confrontation and intimidation factor is something of a liability a jury will convict you of before a poor "defenseless Burglar". Stay with your handgun and get a cheap fun inexpensive to shoot rifle.
All that being said, maybe a handgun in the hands of an LEO of 28 years is one thing and a youngblood another.
Also, if bad guys dont want confrontation, then dont you think racking a shotgun would get them out of my house quicker and possibly ALIVE??
In Texas we shoot em first, let the jury aquit us later.![]()
I know you guys dont know me so take it as you will I am quite confident of my handgun skills my father was in the military before he passed away and taught me everything he knew, we used to shoot on a daily basis.
