First rifle AR-15 or 15/22

Yeah I have a shotgun no idea why I was thinking a ar-15 so guess im getting a 15/22 I have a 30-06 so if stuff goes down got the pistol for close range (if im on the run to the hills) and 30-06 for long range dont really need a ar-15 then Ill pick up a 15/22 for fun!!!

that would depend on brand, year of manufacture, style of the gun........ i honestly dont think i would buy a used AR without checking it out first, you get burned one time you learn to take the time to break a gun down before you buy it :( I also want to say if you are solely wanting a gun for home defense then take the advice of others on here.

Gotcha no this wasnt for home defense

Well I dont know much about ar's so maybe Ill take it to a gun smith have them check it out

Neither gun that you've mentioned is good for home defense or much hunting. The 22 can be used for small game, but I'd personally prefer something that's super accurate... I small game hunt with a TC 22, but that's me.
A long gun for in the house defense and hunting is a shot gun. You can hunt small game, big game, and (if a pump) the sound of the slide racking will get most bad guys on the way to somewhere (actually anywhere) else. As an added bonus you're very likely to NOT shoot the neighbors at the same time as you shoot the intruder with a shot gun.

Just to solidify the point an AR-15 is not a good home defense weapon. I have two but they would probably be my last choice in a firearm if I heard a door opening at 2 AM. The AR is a good ( not great ) long range weapon, 100 plus yards, and although I'm not a hunter, I am told a capable hunting rifle. I personally prefer a handgun, this is my 28th year as an LEO, and would be hesitant to even grab a long shotgun in close quarter defense, but that would be IMHO better than an AR. A handgun can be drawn close to that body and can clear a room admirably. Burglars do not want confrontation and intimidation factor is something of a liability a jury will convict you of before a poor "defenseless Burglar". Stay with your handgun and get a cheap fun inexpensive to shoot rifle.

+1 on the handgun. I also got a 12ga Win Defender with pistol grip at the ready. Hunting rifles present issues extending beyond the intended target. My 45acp with hollow points and 12ga shot shells are less likely to blow through my home sailing through the neighborhood and drop one of my neighbors.

I'm just re-entering the AR-15 arena. There are too many options and a gazillion manufacturers.

It really comes down to what you want to do with the rifle. An AR-15 for NRA matches is a very different beastie than one you'd carry in New Orleans. Don't even look at the prices for 1,000 yard guns; just take another mortgage on the house and sell one kid.

Rifles and shotguns are great for home defense when the bad guys are outside. They're not so great close in and there's the loudness issue as well. The downside to pistols is that their ballistics are terrible in comparison. Most people settle for a good handgun and a short barreled shotgun as a compromise.

I, on the other hand, use rifles on the assumption that I'll be able to control my shots. Home invaders are beginning to use body armor and a handgun is inadequate in that instance.

I also use AK-47's (not 74's). They have S&W revolver-like reliability and are minute of torso to 200 yards. A decent AK is not a target rifle; too many people try to apply range/target shooting to combat shooting. They are very different, but the blur occurs regardless. If your rifle (of any flavor) can shoot a six inch group at 100 yards, then that's good enough. The bad guy will definitely notice a rifle round passing through his torso.

Therefore, what's an AK give you over the AR? Reliability, heavier bullets, concealability, cost and durability. The gun itself is a weapon and various parts can be used to cause damage. The heavier bullets will more easily penetrate vehicles and cover. Folding stocks make it perfect for concealment in a bag. An AK can handle a variety of conditions and still function. However, this reliability is not dramatically better than a well maintained AR-15. The durability is obvious, but cost is the main factor. You can get a decent AK for around $600 (avoid the low end CAI built guns until you know what you're doing). Rails are available and you can mount an Aimpoint on the gun for fast target acquisition.

So what's an AR-15 have over the AK-47? The short answer is distance, accessories and tuning! I'm building my AR-15 around the Trijicon ACOG RCO 4x32 for M4's (the optic the Marines use). This optic makes the gun very deadly at longer ranges with the ballistic drop compensator in the reticle. The ACOG also gives the user the ability to more easily find and identify targets at distance. AR-15s' have tons of options and you can build one using any combination of components. Check out m4carbine.net and poke around. Look for "The Chart" for a comparison of features by brand and model.

If you have no idea what to get, just buy a Colt 6920. It will be a reliable gun that you don't have to tweak. While there are other makes and models out there that offer similar features, it will take much time and research to figure out what the differences mean. If you hate the gun, the pony on the side means the gun will have more value should you decide to sell it.

I want a defense weapon but I have a S&W M&P .40 for that and I know a lot of people want AR-15's to hunt with but the .22lr is actually pretty lethal the only thing is you have to be accurate with it and hit in the right places.

(hopefully this doesnt start a huge flame/debate) but I know a lot of people always want bigger calibers, honestly if it comes out of a barrel at a good speed it is going to hurt and if you place it right, it will kill you.

im sorry, but from this post you told us you wanted a defense weapon, now you dont want a defense weapon. im confused as to what you are asking now or what you are looking for. may want to reiterate a little and we can help you better, but you need to remember no matter what you get if it does its job for you and you enjoy it then you have made the right decision! :)

yeah it kind of got confusing let me explain

First I was looking for a defense weapon but then I got a lot of input and realized a ar-15 is not good for defense weapon but a shotgun is after it was explained to me which I dont know how I didnt figure it out but eh live and learn. (which I have a shot gun 12guage)

So I was thinking of getting a 15/22 to play with but then I found this deal

ar-15
11 mags
800 rounds of ammo
case
spare parts for 900$

and figured 900 was a good price so was thinking about getting it because its such a good deal then I can shoot it (target nothing professional just fun)

So Im still looking towards a 15/22 but figured if I could pick up this ar for 900 then I might do that considering it seems like a good deal!!

Then someone gave input on used ar's so Im going to have it checked out by a gunsmith if he still has it and you guys think its a good deal

When I'm not quite sure about something.....

My suggestion is to go to the store and pickup a 12 pack. About the 9th or 10th things start making more sense to me. Just sayin...

That is an answer I could definitely stay with. :D

While I'd never consider a .223 or 7.62 a good in house defence choice, they would make a good home defence weapon. Certainly a lot more use than a .22lr if you need to reach out and touch someone.

Well in tn if they r past 21 ft its not self defence,:D:D:D

- Handgun by the bed for quick responce.

- 18 1/2 barreled 12g Shotgun for clearing house when the
wife "heard someone".

Nothing else is needed for HD!!!!

First time they set off an alert and I was out there in boxers with an M-16 and limited ammo, I decided to setup something better. A spare pair of boots, (speed laced), with an extra pair of pants pushed down over them fireman style, with all pockets stuffed with mags. .45 hanging from a flac vest with grenades and other usefull items attached. 12 gage hanging from the bed and a 16 nearby. It didn't seem like paranoia then.
Well, don't have to be that prepared anymore.
But in this day and age you still have to be prepared for more than just the single home invader.

I would say the best all around home defence weapon (close quarter) would be a taurus "Judge". 5 round revolver that can shoot .410 gauge shells (buckshot, bird shot, or slugs) or 45 long colt, now that is a compact shotgun/handgun (gotta love it). They are also a blast to shoot.
