I am a new member with a question about the rear sights on
5906 pistols. I have had many guns by smith &wesson, but I
have never encountered this problem. I got two 5906 pistols atthe same time, for my job. They both have what most people call old style adjustable sights . one of these guns shoots so low you aime for the head, and hit just above the crotch on a full sized target. turning the elevation screw has no effect. Is there a spring inside that pushes the sight up?
also, the gun with the problem has a stainless hammer. The other has black carbon steel hammer. The gun with the black hammer is SN#VAN90xx The stainless hamer with the sight problem is TZW36XX. Thanks to all.

Palmeto Sharp Shooter,
Thankyou for your response to my question. I will try what you sugest,
and let you know what happens. Thankyou.

It's been awhile since I had one apart but as I recall there is a spring & plunger in the front that actually holds the sight down. The adjustment screw pushes it up againest the spring. Detent plungers on each side hold the whole works into the guard. As said the sight might be stuck/gunked up or a stripped elevation screw. Your flash chromed hammer and trigger gun dates to '93 the other to late '94-95, you can call S&W customer service and they can give you the exact ship dates off of your serial number.

Palmeto Sharpshooter,
I had to spray gunscrubber under the sight and then run the screw up and down several times. What came out looked like sand and gun powder mixed together. Thank you for your advice. What gun did you have with this kind of sight. tachi62.

Thankyou Handgunner 356,
I have had many guns over the years, but these are the first ones with
this style of rear sight. It is working now, it had a ton of crud and powder under it. These sights seem even mor fragile than the sights on all my revolvers. Florida is now letting Security Officers carry the 9 MM. Thanks to you and Palmeto Sharp Shooter.

I've owned a couple of 459s. Take it to the range and let us know how it shoots.

5906 Rear sights,

Thanks to all. I will go to the indoor range on friday to sight in, then run about a hundred rounds thrue it . I may order a recoil spring while I am at it. tachi62.

If you order a recoil spring I would recommend the Wolff spring, I've used them in both my 659 and 5906, and if you order direct from wolff they include a new firing pin spring also:)

Tachi62 Here, Thanks to everyone. I shot the 5906, and got the sight set, I hit a shoot & see at fifty feet and took out the little red dot. I will need recoil spring. Someone thought I was shooting + P+ ammo,
the brass was hitting people on the head. tachi62.
