Howdy Folks! Been gone a while and most of my recent S&W fun has involved their fine little J-Frames. My department is now opening up its approved list to allow officers to carry something else besides our issued Glocks. I've always been a Glock person but I'm intrigued by the M&P's. Does anyone have a photo comparing the size of the MP9 to the Glock 17?

Asking on this forum you will get nothing but recommendations for the M&P. Personally I would stay with the Glock. However, sounds like you want to try something different in your holster since you can now. You shouldn't lose much reliability going to an M&P, the feel is different, other than that you aren't loosing much. UNLESS you have to buy one with a thumb safety. The M&Ps don't have the size problem that the XD does from what I've seen, the grip is just different. Try it out at a store and see if you like it.

I have a Gen3 G17 in addition to several M&Ps ( 40C and 45 ). In my opinion, the G17 is accurate, dirt simple, and relaible ( trust my life that it will go bang when needed ). With this said, its grip is very 2x4 like, not sure if Gen 4 fixes this feel. I prefer the M&P as it does all the above and fits very well in the hand.
M&P45 is a huge improvement over the G21 grip size. I can appreciate why Glock developed the 45GAP to reduce grip size closer to G17 size.
I did fire the G26 vs. M&P9c ( and 40c ). I found the M&P in either caliber was easier to grip (quickly) with the small lenth grip of these sub compact pistols. I ended up buying the 40c as recoil was very controllable, even in small pistol.

As others have said, key is how it feels in your hand.

The grip on the M&P is much better, and there is no safety lever IN the trigger face to deal with. I tried them both side by side and the M&P just felt better in the hand. The G-17 is a great 9mm-BTW. I may still get one.

I think their both equal. I have the M&P compact 9 and a Glock 22. I can't compare because grips are shorter on my M&P. I seem to like whatever one I'm holding at the time. I shot both yesterday. I took a couple shots with one, then the other going back and forth. I like both. You can't miss with either. I've never had a misfire with either. The Glock trigger may have a better trigger reset. I want the M&P full size also one day.

I use the M&P 9 in competition after using a Glock 17 for many years. The Glock continues to run flawlessly after thousands of rounds. The M&P 9 has needed frequent repairs. At first it was problems with light hits. A local S&W armorer changed everything he could think of and it still malfunctioned. I finally sent it back to the factory and it came back working. Recently the right ambidexterous slide release lever broke off and I had to get a new one from S&W and pay my local gunsmith to repair it. It wouldn't lock back after the new part was installed which necessitated some tweaking. I had never used the right side lever and don't know why it broke. BTW, I know many shooters who have not had trouble with the M&P 9. I continue to shoot it in competition as I think I shoot it better than the Glock. If I was going to carry it for self defense however I would carry the Glock because I trust it to run all the time.

I have five Glocks and shoot them in Steel Challenge, USPSA, and GSSF events. I bought an M&P9 Pro because of the grip size and I admit that it does actually feel better in the hand. But that's the only advantage I can find. The Glock triggers are better, and I find the the Glocks to be more accurate. I was really disappointed with the 'Pro' trigger, and even worse the 'Pro' shoots almost a foot low at 25 yards. To hit anything with it I have to completely blot out the target. I paid extra for the competition trigger and sights and will have to change them out anyway.

I prefer the M&P over the Glock. I have owned 8 different Glock's so I do have some background with them.

The Glock points high for me, have to break my wrist to get the front sight down, and the M&P points naturally.

Peace

here's a picture of the M&P9 with my G22, which is the same size as a G17, but in 40S&W.

+1 on this.

I've only owned 3 glocks; G22, G19 and G26. So I've own and shot most of Glock's frame sizes. At first, I really like Glocks, but then I shot the M&P, and it was all over.

I'm a 1911 guy, and the M&P has the same grip angle, so it's a great transition between the two platforms. So now my G22 points high for me. This is all due to the hump that's on the lower portion of Glock's back strap. I just wished the 4th Gen came with a different back strap to remove the hump. So now, my G22 just sits in the safe.

S&W M&P 9mm FS vs GLOCK 17
both great guns!!! get one of each!
I prefer my S&W , but love my Glock with a rubber grip add on.
the S&W is, in my opinion... a better gun......... your call.. enjoy

I kinda considered myself a Glock guy too only because I bought a Glock 26 as my off duty/CCW gun years ago and have alot of experience and confidence with it. I could not deny the features and quality of the M&P handguns and I recently bought an M&P40 just the other day.

I like its ergos.

The changeable grips are probably the best on the market. (even better than the new Glock Gen4 design)

I like the steel front & rear sights.

I like the stepped rear sight design.

I like the slanted scale style serrations vs plain jane vertical serrations.

I like the loaded chamber indicator.

I like the ambi slide stop levers.

I like the fact that I dont have to dry fire the gun to field strip it.

I like that its less blocky than my Glock.

And most importantly, I like the fact that that its made in America and is actually a solid American product. We are in a recession so I really dont feel like supporting Austria & Croatia.

I was going to get the new gen4 Glock but it just didnt add up on paper or make me fall in love with it in person...so I am an M&P guy now? The only bad thing is that now I want to buy an M&P40c to replace my G26???

You will have to shoot them both and see which you like better.
I prefer the M&P's in fullsize and compact, although the Glock 26/27 are amazing shooters.

I only have pics of my 23 vs M&P FS, and then of my 27 vs M&P Compact.

There are about 100 reasons why I won't own a glock but only 1 reason why I don't own more Smiths (currently have 4) and that is money. The Glock was a great design 20 years ago but the ergonomics are just plain crappy. Support the US and US manufacturers. Just because a company has a plant in the US doesn't mean their profits stay here.
