I'm also NOT a fan of hooked trigger guards. Placing a finger on the front of the trigger guard has been "out of favor" since about 1980 because of it's negative effect on accuracy so why are we still "force fed" a needless feature.
I'm also not a fan of "tactical rails" on a handgun. IMO it's not very bright to mount a light on a handgun because you are providing an excellent target for an opponent to aim at. It's a handgun folks, learn how to shoot it with one hand and use the other to hold a flashlight, preferably well out of alignment with your body.
Practice with the 38 spl. and carry the 357 Magnum. I've shot both and the difference in recoil, POI, and the ability to execute a timely followup is distinctly different. If you want to carry with the 357 Magnum, then practice with the 357 Magnum. If you find you can't shoot the 357 Magnum worth a lick, it's a pretty good clue that the same will hold true when you actually need to defend yourself.
