My 15-22 MOE arrived at my LGS around noon today. Looks great and I can't wait to shoot it. Should I go ahead and take the mag assist button off the mag? I have a Red Dot from Primary Arms that should be here tomorrow for it. I think I need to move the forward grip back some also.....?

Here is an updated pic. I took her for a spin today. Shot 300rds and only had one FTF and that was a Winchester Xpert HV. It ate CCI and Remington
lead bullets. Not sure what kind of Rem ammo it was as I had it laying around loose but I'm think it was Peter's. Only thing I found wrong with the rifle is it doesn't come with enough mags!!

I've heard that the assist button was causing rounds to be loaded wrong (tilted I guess?) and causing failure to chamber the round. Maybe that was a problem with earlier mags but I have read on the net that some folks have removed the button. I didn't see any reason to remove it when I shot my rifle so I had already made up my mind to keep it.

Ditto! My son has the Sig 522, he loves the rifle, but really wished it had the load assist buttons of my 15-22. Bought him one of the black dog loaders. Much better now.

Its really not rocket science using the load assist and having the bullets stagger. I imagine some people are just pulling the button down all the way and dropping the bullets in, which I guess is why they are having problems?

To get a perfect stagger EVERY time I put in the first round and then I do the following for the subsequent 24. Assuming you are holding the mag upright, take your next round and hold it so it is pointing straight up at the sky. Place the round on top of the one in the mag right at the center (right in the notched area). Keep downward pressure on the rounds in the mag as you begin to pull on the load assist button. Pull down only enough so that you can tilt the round forward 90 degrees under the catches and into the mag. I just loaded 12 mags today for my trip to the range this weekend and they were all perfect. Like crracer said, if you pull on the buttons and drop rounds in they will stagger poorly. When I first got my 15-22 I wasn't staggering the rounds too well. While this never caused me any feeding issues, it did make it a chore to get that last one into the mag.

Most loading issues come from having the rims overlap. If the next round to load has rim behind the one below it it will grab when going in and causes problems. Laod a mag and put some in that way and just try to push them out by hand you will see that the ones stacked correctly will just slide out, but if the one you are pushing out has rim behind the next it will "nosedive" and is harder to remove.

It's not the presence of the button that causes the problems, but rather the improper use of it. No reason to remove it unless you're too impulsive to operate it correctly.
Never pull it down so far that the rounds drop/fall in. Just enough so that all the pressure isn't coming from your feeding hand. Vertical/horizontal orientation of the magazine has never been an issue for me.

I love my load assist button. I press it down just enough to insert the next round, and always ensure the proper staggering. I've never had a feed-related problem in almost 6000 rounds.
As others have mentioned, if you use it like a Ruger 22/45 magazine's load assist and just dump rounds into the mag, you're going to have problems.

I've put hundreds of rounds through my magazines, and never ever had a problem. The KEY is to use the mag assist knob just enough to put the next round in, and then let it move up by itself a bit. So you just pull down on the mag assist button a little... If you pull it down too much and drop the ammo in you'll have issues.

I've never had a single issue. Without the mag knob I'd be irritated. It works if you do it right!

the only time ive had a problem with the magazine, is when i havnt been to the range and im reloading them and i get antsy. other than that not one problem.

Along with the before mentioned method of only letting off just enough pressure with the mag assist off the spring to insert the next round I also use the old Vietnam method of rapping the rear of the mag on something hard ( usually the palm of my hand ) to seat the ammo to the rearmost part of the mag. Vietnam vets use to rap the fresh mag on their helmets to do the same thing.

i'm pretty sure you need at least double that... and some couplers. maybe a couple shorties too.
