I found a couple of dogs running loose in my neighborhood Sunday afternoon. I would love to get them back to their owner. I have put ads on craigslist and the local paper's online edition, notified the local lab rescue, and put signs in the neighborhood. So far, no luck. I've had a couple of calls, but they were looking for a spaniel and a beagle. These aren't the dogs you are looking for. ;) I wish they were.

So, my questions:

Need positive breed IDs. Yellow lab and a Yorkie?
The lab has green mucus covering (nearly) both eyes. She won't be still long enough for me to wipe it away. Is this a problem, or communicable to other dogs, cats, or humans?
Any other ideas for advertising them?
What do I do if no one comes for them? I can't keep them. I don't have the time they need, plus I travel. My wife and daughter wouldn't give them the proper attention they deserve when I'm gone. Should I call the lab rescue and the yorkie rescue and split them up? I don't want to send them to the pound.

Here they are. I call them Mutt and Jeff. Jeff is the little guy. Mutt is a girl.

I think the little one is a silky terrier.

They might have a microchip in them, a local vet can check that.

Actually - most people in this area check the shelters for their lost dogs first. I would let the local shelter know you found a couple so they can relay the information if someone calls if you don't want to take the dogs to the shelter for some reason. Newspaper ads are probably second, but most people don't buy our rag out here.

The first dog looks to be a yellow lab mix - silky terrier is a good guess for the second one.

The eye goop is probably an eye infection - or could be allergies. Most of the time it's an ear infection that has traversed the eye canal into the eyes, and should be checked by a vet.

You know - a person really should take strays into the shelter as they could have internal injuries, or other medical needs, could have flea infestations, etc. I know you probably are afraid the dog will be put down, but the shelters will notify you (if you want to be notified) prior to that so you can come back and claim the dog. Mean time it gets checked over by a vet and treated for any problems and you don't have to pay the bill. However, there may be an adoption fee if you go back to claim the dog later.

JMHO

The best to you for being a concerned friend to the animals.

Looks like a yellow lab and silky terrier to me also. The eye discharge is more likely an infection. Usually eye discharge caused by allergies will be clear. Yellow and green suggest an infection. I would call the rescues you mentioned. The lab needs to get the eye problem treated and the rescues will give them both any medical attention they need as well as getting them in good homes if the owners can't be found.

Pugsters says thanks for helping out her pals.

In addition to what has already been posted... Local veterinarians and their staff will often recognize dogs. If someone brought Pugsters in to her vet they would know her. Places like Petco and Pet Smart usually have bulletin boards for lost animals, and that Terrier may be recognized by one of their groomers if you brought the dog in.

I hate to say this but in this economy, folks have been know to just drop their pets off in a good neighborhood, hoping someone with a good heart will take them in. No collar on either one?
Thanks for being a friend to those critters.

Yes, thanks.

There are a lot of good suggestions here. I can't think of any more to add, but remember, if the choice is to split them up or something worse, splitting them up may be the only way they will survive. Dogs adapt. If they have a good home, they will be OK. Good luck and thanks again for your kindness.

Already done. Anyone know if a vet would charge to scan them for a chip? I really can't afford a vet visit...

Around here, you can call animal control, and they'll come out to your house to do a quick scan for you...especially if you tell them what's going on.

All the vets around here would do a scan for free, as well as the humane societies.

The world needs every good citizen it can get, and in my book, you're one of them.

Good luck,

Len

+1

Thanks for helping these two.

Bless you for taking those guys in. You probably saved their lives.

The vets in my neighborhood have lost pet bulletin boards. Might have a look. Maybe they're posted & you could leave a flier up if the owners are looking.

Give your local vet a quick call tell him what you found and ask if he would scan them for free. Mine would - so I feel confident that 99% of the Vet's around the country would as well. After all - animal care is their life - they're concerned about the welfare of these two as much as we are.

Best to you.

Pete

Had the vet scan the terrier today. No chip. I didn't take the lab, as I think she would have torn up my car. The terrier fit in the carrier we use for the cats. I also took him for a walk around the neighborhood, hoping he would lead me back to his home or that someone would recognize him. No luck.

Anyone need a couple of really sweet dogs?

man....I was at the Vet Tues. to pick up meds for my two little dogs. There was a rescue lady there that was fostering a 10 mo. old Chihuahua / Toy fox terrier mix. She was doing a follow up visit. The little dog had a cast on it's leg. All the Vets there are women. They were all pestering me to take that little dog. I have been fighting the impulse all week.

Take it home, JcMack. It's small. It can't eat much. ;)

Yeah, I would like to. But you know, we know, everybody knows, a free dog usually costs the most. This little dog is a male. My other 2 dogs are female. (they are spayed) If his leg doesn't heal right I'll have another dog with a leg problem. Even so if it sets straight my whole place is stairs. I don't think even when fully grown he could negotiate a full flight of stairs. I have to go back to the Vet today. I hope he's been adopted.

Sorry to step on your thread. :)

I don't think you stepped on it. At this point, it's someone like you I'm looking for. I'm really starting to believe that these dogs were dumped. Someone said, "I can't keep these dogs so I'll just let them out in a nice neighborhood. They'll take care of them." I have words to describe that someone, but Lee would rap my knuckles with that giant gorilla ruler if I posted them here. Some kind soul like yourself will, hopefully, take one or both of these pups into their home and give them the life they deserve.
