This is a tear jerker.
However, you made the right decision.
The weather fit the mood this morning, the sun was up in the east, but thunder storm clouds were already coming in from the west and rain was just over the horizon.
The girls met me at the gate ready to be let out of the pen. When I opened the gate and knelt down they were both on me with "pet me first . . . no, pet me first . . . ."
After a few rubs on the head for both of them I said, "let's go girls," and off they went making a mad dash across the field at warp speed.
The wind picked up and the skies started to darken as the forecasted storm clouds moved in and hid the sun. I could see the rain moving in just across the valley about a 1/2 mile away so I called the girls in to the garage and gave them both a snack.
Dixie's new owners said they'd be by around 9:00 am to pick her up this morning, I got a bucket of water and some of Daisy's dog shampoo and gave Dixie a bath. She seemed not to mind it and she thoroughly loved the drying off with the towel. About the time I was finished drying her off Daisy came up and grabbed a corner of the towel and tugged, then Dixie grabbed another corner and the tug-a-war was on . . . then I heard a rip. I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of Mrs. Faulkner's good bathroom towels, but you never know. I'll need to make sure that towel disappears out in the barn.
After a good brushing and fluffing, Dixie let me take one last photo as she sat on the park bench at the barn, and it was good timing because just then a vehicle came up the drive.
As the nice folks got out of their vehicle there was a loud clap of thunder and it had started to sprinkle. Daisy and Dixie both ran up and greeted the folks, and the nice lady knelt down and hugged Dixie.
She rubbed Dixie's head and said "we are so looking forward for you to come home with us, it's been too quiet around our place for the past couple of years."
I smiled at that because that's how it was around our place before we got Daisy.
The rain started to come down pretty steady at this point. "No sense prolonging the inevitable and all of us getting soaked," I said. They were in an SUV with a carrier in the back so I walked Dixie around back and she loaded up without any problem. After closing the hatch they both thanked me again and we shook hands all around.
"We'll take good care of her!"
"I know."
As Dixie drove off with her new family, Daisy and I stood in the rain and watched them go.
