Dixie

Faulkner,
Capella found a toy with Dixie’s name on it, will get it sent in the next couple days.
Kevin

Ha, that's great Kevin because Daisy refused to share hers! I pulled it out of the toybox and held it out for Dixie to have a sniff and Daisy's would have no part of it, gnarled teeth and all.

They are a great looking pair!

I am glad that you got her, instead of some uncertain fate, you sir, are a great home.

And if you ever have a shortage of tennis balls, let me know and I'll ship up a box full.

Nothing finer than a picture of a dog , except maybe a PC offering . Seems like we have a lot of dog lovers here . A couple of years ago I had a post "Let's See Some Dogs" or something like that . I can't remember how many thousands answered it , but it showed how many of us dog lovers are here . I held Nebula a little closer after reading Faulkners post .

UPDATE:

So the word is out in our small community of friends and family that Dixie is staying with us . . . . maybe permanent, maybe not. There are certain challenges that we will have to overcome if Dixie stays, but we are in no way anxious for her to leave either.

So, I received a call on Sunday afternoon from a buddy asking about Dixie, saying he'd heard a little about the backstory on her. I filled him in on the situation and he asked, "are you going to keep her?"

"I'm kind of torn on it . . . Daisy and Dixie seem to be enjoying each other's company, but we really don't need two border collies on our place. If I'd wanted two, I'd have picked out two to bring home when I picked out Daisy as a pup. But, we not going to just let Dixie go to any 'ole someone else either, it has to be the right fit."

"I may have the right fit," he says, "if you're interested."

He goes on to tell me his mother and father-in-law are retired and run some cattle on a 140 acre spread about 60 miles away. They have always had Australian shepherds and their last one died a couple of years ago. They've talked about a replacement, but just didn't really want to go the puppy route. They don't necessarily want a working dog, just a companion to go out with them and ride on the side-by-side when they check the cows and such. She'd have plenty of room to herself and our grandkids will be over pretty regular to play with. Besides, my in-laws are great with dogs.

We set up a time for them to come meet Dixie this afternoon. We'll see how it goes.

Here's my thoughts on this situation:

We are all involved in this now and I'm sure that if it came to a vote it would be unanimous for you keeping Dixie. But you know all the aspects of the deal and we are all certain, I'm sure, of two things.
1. You are a good man and responsible dog owner and you love these
dogs.

2. Even if it might be inconvenient to keep Dixie you would never let her go to a situation that wasn't ideal for her.

I am comfortable with either way it goes because either way both dogs, even though they won't be together, Will be happy, loved, and well cared for and that is the important thing.

Thanks for taking care of things the right way. Not everyone would go to the trouble.

Another post that deserves more than one like.

Some say keeping both is why Dixie came to you. Others say that Dixie and the in-laws are a perfectly good match. All I know is you’re a good person to make that call… and yes, we want pictures :)

We met (i.e., interviewed :)) the prospective new owners and, quite frankly, they're perfect for Dixie. They have the experience, they have the room and enough to keep a border collie occupied, they have the time to devote to making Dixie's transition successful, and it was obvious when they met Dixie they have the passion.

After we visited for a while I handed them Dixie's leash and let them have some time with her alone while I took Daisy off out of sight so the two sisters wouldn't be pre-occupied with one another. Mrs. Faulkner, Daisy and I sat on the front porch while these folks spend about 30 minutes walking with Dixie around our place. After their walk they came back up to the porch. They said they would love to have Dixie come live with them if we were okay with it. I stood up and shook their hands and the decision was made. Their only ask was that they were not prepared to bring her home today and could they come back and get her in a couple of days after they'd made a few preparations for her at home.

"No problem," I said.

As the nice folks drove off I snapped this picture of Dixie and Mrs. Faulkner on the front porch steps. After I snapped the picture she looked over at me and said, "I might not can let her go in two more days."

This must have been a tough decision, it certainly would have been for me. But all things considered it was the right one. I wouldn't worry too much about Daisey. She'll be fine. I think you and Mrs. Faulkner are going to go through more anguish and doubt than she is. For all Daisy knows that was never intended to be any more than just a visit anyway. I doubt she "got her hopes up".

In this world today I am greatly encouraged that there are still people around to see that a good animal can have a happy ending. Wouldn't it be great if it could happen a lot more often!!!

This is a tear jerker.

However, you made the right decision.

The weather fit the mood this morning, the sun was up in the east, but thunder storm clouds were already coming in from the west and rain was just over the horizon.

The girls met me at the gate ready to be let out of the pen. When I opened the gate and knelt down they were both on me with "pet me first . . . no, pet me first . . . ."

After a few rubs on the head for both of them I said, "let's go girls," and off they went making a mad dash across the field at warp speed.

The wind picked up and the skies started to darken as the forecasted storm clouds moved in and hid the sun. I could see the rain moving in just across the valley about a 1/2 mile away so I called the girls in to the garage and gave them both a snack.

Dixie's new owners said they'd be by around 9:00 am to pick her up this morning, I got a bucket of water and some of Daisy's dog shampoo and gave Dixie a bath. She seemed not to mind it and she thoroughly loved the drying off with the towel. About the time I was finished drying her off Daisy came up and grabbed a corner of the towel and tugged, then Dixie grabbed another corner and the tug-a-war was on . . . then I heard a rip. I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of Mrs. Faulkner's good bathroom towels, but you never know. I'll need to make sure that towel disappears out in the barn.

After a good brushing and fluffing, Dixie let me take one last photo as she sat on the park bench at the barn, and it was good timing because just then a vehicle came up the drive.

As the nice folks got out of their vehicle there was a loud clap of thunder and it had started to sprinkle. Daisy and Dixie both ran up and greeted the folks, and the nice lady knelt down and hugged Dixie.

She rubbed Dixie's head and said "we are so looking forward for you to come home with us, it's been too quiet around our place for the past couple of years."

I smiled at that because that's how it was around our place before we got Daisy.

The rain started to come down pretty steady at this point. "No sense prolonging the inevitable and all of us getting soaked," I said. They were in an SUV with a carrier in the back so I walked Dixie around back and she loaded up without any problem. After closing the hatch they both thanked me again and we shook hands all around.

"We'll take good care of her!"

"I know."

As Dixie drove off with her new family, Daisy and I stood in the rain and watched them go.

A happy ending but it does have a bitter/sweet aspect to it. your last sentence put a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.

I learned a long time ago about the cathartic effect you can get by writing down your experiences and how they affected you. I hope that writing about it will bring you some comfort and the realization that you did the right thing.
