The dis-assembly lever on my M&P 9c won't lock down. I have to hold it down with one hand while releasing the slide with the other. No such problem on my full size M&P. Anyone else have this issue or know a fix?

Today was it's first trip to the range. First excitement, now disappointment. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Both of mine I have to hold with my thumb. I just assumed it was normal. hmm...

Pinch the barrel and recoil rod together and the latch will remain in place.

Mine pops back up too, like previously mentioned, I just hold it down with my thumb, no disappointment for me, doesn't bother me in the least.

Sear lever

The sear de-activate lever has nothing to do with the slide takedown lever's operation. More likely it's how the recoil spring guide rod or barrel lug is resting against the cross pin.

I never use the sear de-activate lever when taking my standard size M&P9 apart and the takedown lever stays in the downward position like it should. Just pull the trigger to release the slide like my Glock.

My two other guns that use this same style of takedown lever ( FN FNP9 and Sig P226 ) also do not need to have the takedown lever held during disassembly.

Mine doesn't say put either (9c). I just hold it there when necessary. Doesn't bother me. Not a gun I am fanatical about cleaning so I don't mess with the lever but once every couple months or 500 rounds whichever happens first.

Hello... this is normal. I'll never forget when I bought my first gun the S&W 9mm... I took it a part several times before I shot it and the lever stayed put... ran some rounds on it cleaned it and now it moves and I have to hold it forward to take the slide off... It not a big deal. I too was freaking out! Hope this puts your mind at ease.

My story exactly:D

Thanks for the replies. Not so put out now that I know it's common. Like I mentioned, this is my second M&P and the first one works fine ("normal"). I also watched a couple of videos and theirs was "normal" so I thought maybe something was wrong with mine.

This sounded intriguing since I can see the rod move every time I flip the latch. So I tried it and it worked!

Thanks.

Same "issue" with my 40c. If anything, I think it could be seen as an advantage. Inadvertant dissasembly is extremely unlikely, but this makes it all the more unlikely.

And the same here. It stayed put for my initial inspection and cleaning. Plus a few more take downs to check out the insides of my new pistol. After the first range trip it no longer stayed by itself.

Only Compacts ?

So this seems to be a issue only with compact models ? If so I assume it's due to the different angles from the shorter barrel and guide rod.

Has anyone had this happen on the 4.25" barrel ?

No, it's full size also. The reports I've seen across the web have not been confined to the compacts. Mine is FS and theneko mentions his is.

Pinching ?

Pinch the barrel and recoil rod together and the latch will remain in place.

Funny that on my fullsize M&P9 the lever stays down on it's own but if I squeeze the guide rod and barrel together then it flips back up. The gun is new and this may change once it gets worn in more.

Also wonder if anyone else's lever automatically flips back up upon re-assembly when you rack the slide ? Mine does.

I see there is a little nub or tit on the forward side of the takedown pin where it contacts the guide rod. It looks like it is machined that way and may have an effect on how the lever operates.
