We discussed chocolate recently. I was munching on some cashews today and began reflecting on nuts.

My favorites are cashews, hazelnuts, filberts/chestnuts, and pecans. Also like Brazil nuts and walnuts. Don't really care for macadamias. Almonds are okay, but I don't go after them as fast as the others named.

What are your favorites, and do you know of any brands as good as Planter's? I've been disappointed with some store brands.

BTW, a Brazilian girl I know on the Net mentioned that her dad collects cashews, and that it's so hot there this year that some cashew pods haven't developed proper nuts. Just slush in the pod, or whatever. I hope that doesn't drive up cashew prices here. She lives in the state of Pernambuco (Recife is the best known coastal city there) ; it may not be that hot elsewhere.

Do you buy raw nuts and roast them, ot just get canned ones?

I like my nuts roasted (gently) with a little salt. I'm not a big fan of pistachio's, but I can pretty well handle (ahem) the rest. I think my favorite would be pecans, lightly salted.

That's a tough one. I am not big on peanuts, but like just about all the others you mention. I guess if I had to narrow it down it would be a knock-down, drag-out between the cashews and the pecans, and I believe the pecans would win - by a whisker. :)

I thought filberts were also called hazelnuts not chestnuts?? I could be wrong.

Anyways I would have to say that my favorite would be microwave roasted chestnuts, b/c it reminds me of when I was little in my grandmothers house around Christmas time. When there are a bowl of mixed nuts I go after the hazelnuts first and more frequently than any other nut. Although once I have one pistachio I have to finish the entire bag. Then again in the right setting such as baseball games and waiting on your order at 5 guys a roasted peanut in the shell can not be beat!

Pecans, roasted with a little butter and salt. A bit sweeter are Trader Joe's Candied Pecans in the flat 5 oz bags. Roasted chestnuts in season. Smoked almonds.

All wonderful. My lady likes lightly salted cashews.

Dyson

nuts..................i like em all...........roasted and salted............cant get enough

Honey roasted peanuts, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, pecans. I guess I am nuts about nuts.

Try My Nuts: Try My Nuts Jalapeno Cheddar Peanuts 12 oz.

found this little shop in Corolla, NC last summer. I've gotta say they have some good gourmet blends. the guy behind the counter pretty much let us sample everything they made. i could have spent a whole lot of $$$ in that store.

i'd rather chew on sunflower seeds, but stick a jar of peanuts or cashews in front of me and i won't stop until you take the jar or they are all gone...

I had a girlfriend everybody called Peanut. She was only three and a half feet tall. I was nuts over her.

Seriously? You can't say "no puns" and expect us not to.

Salted pecans are my favorite followed by filberts.

Me too (re: Filberts and Hazelnuts).

BTW: Uncooked cashews can be deadly. And poison oak is a member of the cashew family.

Cashews and an occasional almond. Everything else you can keep. I will not eat anything that came within touching distance of nuts, especially those nasty pecan and walnut things!
Anything peanut is good, but since peanuts are considered a legume, we'll save that for a different post.

Does anyone remember Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts? They were a band in the 60s that played dirty songs. They used to play college frat parties.

Yep. Never saw them live. When they came around here, I was too young to go. By the time I was old enough, they were a fading nostalgia act.

For a long time, I thought they were apocryphal, but they were for real.

I like them all, but usually have some roasted peanuts everyday since they're cheap. Just buy some raw peanuts in the shell, put them in a single layer in a pizza pan, and roast at 320 degrees for about 1 hour and 22 minutes - yeah, I've got it down to a science.

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts! There's a name I haven't heard in a while!

"Nuts, hot nuts, you get them from the peanut man"
