Your Favorite Nuts; No Puns, Please

Good old Virginia peanuts for me, from Planters.

Of course, I also like boiled peanuts. I had an uncle down in Thomasville, Alabama that was never more than about a foot or so away from a pile of boiled peanuts when he was home in the evening.

An 8 ounce bag of pistachios and a couple of Shiner Bocks is comfort food for me. :D

I love cashews, pistachios, pecans and black walnuts in that order.

Never tried a chestnut but always wanted to. Never been anywhere they were sold I guess. They do not grow around here.

If one is a diabetic, nuts are pretty much out of the question though. I have to severely limit my intake of nuts.

No puns? Awww, what the shell's wrong with that? :p
Oh, alright, my favorites would be honey roasted, cinnamon pecans, walnuts, and the free ones on Southwest.

Cashews and pistachios. I also like a lot of other kinds, but by themselves. Please don't ruin both a good nut and a good cookie or brownie or cake by mixing the two!

But Mrs Fields Macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies are sooooo good :D

I do like oatmeal raisin cookies, and cranberry nut cookies.

Lee-

That was a fascinating link! Thanks. :)

In the case of my fan fic, the explorers were gathering the nuts in the remote Brazilian jungle, and they were fresh off the trees. Those were definitely raw. They didn't want to take chances. A prominent biologist with them told them how to deal with the cashews, for safe consumption. Local Indians also taught them how to prepare them. I think manioc is also toxic if not prepared the right way. It's amazing that people learn how to deal with such matters when they need food. But the human race is clever and adaptable, thank goodness.

Yeah! Wonder who was the first? How'd he feel? How'd it happen?

Acorns can be poisonous because of the tannic acid but the grinding/washing process takes care of that.

Me too (re: Filberts and Hazelnuts).

BTW: Uncooked cashews can be deadly. And poison oak is a member of the cashew family.

I've tried raw cashews fresh off the tree while working in Maharashtra, India. They're not poison, just have a terrible bitter taste. The locals there rinse the nuts and roast them.

Found out that at my advanced age that a handful of Planters salted cocktail peanuts in the evening will stop my nightly stomach discomfort. A can last about two weeks. It was a wonderful surprize.

The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg praline glazed peanuts. They are incredible. Take the peanuts out of Cracker Jack and imagine them made by a gourmet chef. Addictive.
