The model 39 would be a great item if it was chambered in 38 super.
That would make it a very powerful carry in a slim package.

I seem to remember the Army Marksmanship Unit using 39s or maybe 1911s in 38AMU, a version of the 38 Super I think. Been a long time.

EDIT, duh, make that 52s not 39s

The slide stroke and magazine of the M39 et seq are not long enough for standard spec .38 Super. Jerry Gebby rechambered M39s to .38 Super but had to handload them with 90 grain bullets to fit the action length. Probably not reasonable to ask S&W to tool up for a new frame to handle a niche cartridge.

The .38 AMU was pretty much a .38 Special Mid Range (wadcutter) with semi-rim the same diameter as .38 Super.

Nice to know there's another .38 Super fan out there. It's my personal favorite cartridge. I have a Colt 1911 in .38S. Colt still makes them as do a few others off-shore. That said, it's been pretty much kicked to the curb by the .40 S&W. For that reason alone I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for S&W to build a .38 Super.
