I like Hornady 175gr critical duty or 165 gold dot Double Taps. Don't know if DT makes them any more. 3rd choice is my own hand load 155gr XTP 9.3 gr Longshot new starline brass. This load is the most accurate of the 3 but the Critical duty has the best penetration and expansion characteristics.

Robby:

I like Speer Gold Dot 124 grain JHP +P short barrel.

Youtube has some good videos on defense ammo.

Gold Dot penetrates 13 inches in gel, retains most of its mass, mushrooms even after traveling through denim and makes 3 inch gashes as it travels through the gel.

I feel pretty good it can get the job done.

There is a reason why they call it "Gold" Dot. A box of 20 short barrel will take 26 Washington's.

It is not target ammo.

Same thing. Only difference is the zombie has a green center and a brass case. The critical defense has a nickel plate case and orange center. Same price but one has a better case. IMHO.

I use Federal HST P9HST3 124 +P. Solid stuff, and well recommended. I also like Speer Gold Dot 124 +P and Remington Golden Sabre.

Exactly, I like the nickel plate myself, better feeding. I'm using the 115 gr Critical Defense. At my LGS the CD is a bit higher though.

I would ONLY buy what you can get in 50rd boxes! Everything else (except $14-$15/50 rem golden sabers) is a greedy scam--why pay 70-100% more for ammo that is AT BEST on par with Federal HST, SPEER GD, and Wichester Ranger. Those 3 are all available online in 50rd boxes for the same price as 20-25rds of the Hornady or Corbon or whatever. They're using fear to sell overpriced stuff (hoping you'll pay the MOST for what you assume is the "best" when your life is on the line).

Though there are variables like clothing, barriers, etc., those 3 brands will all suit you well. Especially for CCW distances. I shot Speer when I got it for free, and still would if Federal and Winchester werent a few bucks more affordable. The HSTs just do soooo well in testing, and can be found for $24.95, so anyone who pays that--or more--for Hornady is buying into advertising hype or something (not performance) IMHO. I often get the 147gr hi-shocks for $16.99/50, and feel perfectly confident in them.

Assuming youre talking 9mm, I'd stick with 124GR or 147gr...as long as th gun eats it with no issues. Placement is more important, and no one will know the difference between 115 and 147 going through their eye socket--but for COM, the heavier bullets generally penetrate deeper. Unless you've shot a lot, I'd stick with standard pressure--the +Ps may slow follow-up down without lots of practice (and at 1-4yards, the extra 50-90fps won't be noticeable to the BG).

Corbon DPX is in all my pistols

Look at the SIM tests on youtube by Troutoutdoors

3/4 inch expansion.......

I did my own backyard tests with Wetpack and 4 layers of blue jeans

The Corbon was better than any of the others in expansion and penetration, with HSTs in second

Robby;

I gather you have the 9 mm version? First, buy a decent supply of 115 or 124 gr FMJ ammo for practice. It will recoil similar to the expensive SD ammo.

Next, try several of the options mentioned above. Any JHP round in the above weights should work well. Try to ignore green tips, +++P, and other distractions. Once you find a loading that functions 100%, is accurate for you and the gun and you can afford, buy a good supply, practice regularly and call it good. Hope this is helpful.

Ima shoot the hornadys zombie max they are cheaper than critical defense 15 bucks online critical is 23 at my stores whats this about anti freeze for the tip?

Zombie has a green tip; critical defense has a red tip. That and the brass versus nickel case are the only difference. For 25rds, $15 isn't bad...still not as good a deal as HST and Ranger at good prices. Plus, I've heard of Hornady having bad batches--haven't heard of a bad batch of HST or Rangers. Not saying it never happened or won't.

Wow. Though I tend to avoid +P, for that price I'd get it.

That 115gr Speer GD video was good...though 115 ammo does seem to lose more % of velocity than 124 and 147 from what I've read....so it might be 70-100fps slower out of the Shield barrel (vs the G19 in the test) and not perform at that level. I, personally, find the recoil a bit snappy in those lightweight, fast loads, so I prefer 930-940fps 147gr, though 1025-1050 130gr standard pressure would be my ideal.

I really think at most common CCW distances of 3-6 feet, no one's gonna notice the difference between most good brands regardless of weight and speed, so paying 75-100% more for one ammo over another just encourages everyone to market their latest, greatest stuff in 20-25rd $25 boxes and maximize profits.
