I don't know anything about gun laws in Virginia but, here on Michigan, you don't need your permit to buy a gun. So, I'm just wondering why you didn't start your search sooner?
I was on the wait list at my LGS for 8 weeks before mine came in, it's a 9mm & it's fantastic for CC.

No, didn't need the permit to buy the gun just wanted to have the CCW permit in hand before buying a concealed carry gun. Even though VA is a "shall issue" state, applications do get rejected for various reasons.

Welcome to the world of legally armed concealed carry (or open if I want) you will find that you have now taken on a great responsibility and view life in a lot different matter. Keep in mind that you are responsible for those bullets that are discharged from your weapon, it is a very serious matter.
I know that my outlook on life in general is a whole lot different than what it would be if I were not armed legally!

Like the rest, congrats on that permit!! My Utah permit should be here any day now. The Chicago Communists make us go outside the state for our right to carry, of course not recognized by our socialist state, but we can be safe outside state lines, at least!

I guess I don't understand these sentiments. Were you a wacko nutjob before you got a CCW and the training somehow settled you down? It's no greater responsibility than driving a car, probably less since most CCW holders never shoot anyone.
LOL, well I guess it depends on who you ask! You are correct; driving a car is a lot like carrying a gun. Both are deadly weapons and I know people who shouldn't be driving let alone carrying a gun.
To everyone who said "Congrats", I say Thanks. Now I have to choose between the Shield 40 and 9mm. Decisions, decisions.

I didn't have to go through "training" when I lived in VA for a CCW either. Anyone with a DD214 can present that or a Hunter's Safety Course certificate too, and those are good enough. There's no SD class or anything unless they have changed it since I left in 2008 (God, I hope they didn't). I don't think Houdini was saying he was a "wacko nutjob" before he got a CCW either.
I agree with him that carrying a weapon confers responsibility. I think it does more so that driving a car. A vehicle is a responsibility that most never consider the consequences behind. I agree with that. In general I see lots of people that "can't drive." I can even draw similarities between the two (don't drink and drive / don't drink and shoot). However they're two very different things. The car is typically not a defensive weapon used to protect yourself and your family (could be in the right situation I guess).
Anyway, I really digress too far and go on too long (I admit). The point is that having a general attitude that driving your car is more dangerous than discharging your firearm in public is probably not a good attitude to have. I may be paranoid too, but I don't have the attitude towards the pistol on my hip that "I will never have to use this." I think about what would happen if I DO have to. I practice so I can be prepared. And also, I look at it as kind of like the good Samaritan law: In that as being an armed citizen you have a responsibility to do something. God forbid if I was ever in a "McDonald's Massacre" situation where someone starting blasting the crowd, but if I was, and I have the ability to stop it, then I feel the obligation to do so. Even if I don't know another soul in the room, I still feel that. That's something I didn't think about before I started to CCW.

I did it backwards I guess. Got my shield in April, then took the ccw class in May. However, I'm going to wait until I'm back from China to apply for the permit. No good spending $105 on a permit i can't use for six months.

For one thing, because you now have to be aware of disparity of force.
You can't simply pull over to the side of the road and fist fight with another driver who gave you the finger. Even escalating scenarios verbally may make you liable.
I highly recommend Massad Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme" for anyone who carries a firearm. Definitely worth reading and thinking about.

$105 dollars for one year?!!! Where do you live so that I never move there? In VA it was $50 for five years and in AL it varies a slight bit depending on county, but in my county it is 10 bucks for a year.

Nope, you never did. That was why I asked if it was 105 for one year.
