It's meth labs around here that suck. The Kentucky mountain side pot farmers have been around forever and some say they are good for the local economy where it's always been coal mines, moonshine or move on down the line, just like in Coal Miners Daughter.

True Story

All that pot reminds me that in the 70's we raided a grow site and pulled a large (state) dump truck full of mature plants. We took them to the state garage and piled them in a field out back of their offices. Threw in some gas and a match and watched as plumes of smoke drifted away. The only problem came when the wind shifted direction. Before we could evacuate the area we had a dozen or so state (highway) employees stoned on pot. It's at times like that you're glad someone else is in charge.

In our area of SW utah there has been a lot found. I know of about 8 MJ farms found in the last two years. So far I belive there has been between 25 to 30 arrests in the two years. All have been illegals. The mexican drug cartel is behind this.
This site is 3 years old now but interesting on how to reconise a MJ farm when you see one.

Central and Northeast Washington are hotspots for this type of activity. Around the west side it's mostly rolling meth labs set up in a van. I never venture into the woods unarmed.

DS, Up here the Meth Labs have a habit of taking care of themselves...

Skunkweed has been grown in small patches up here since I was in high school. I still stumble across empty plastic planters and small round circles of oddly colored soil while bird hunting. Most of this low grade dope gets pulled by the end of October. Now that cultivation is state sanctioned under the guise of "Medical MJ" alot of the growers have come out of the shadows and I'm told that there is no shortage of grass around.

Our real problem up here is Oxy and other 'script based narcotics. The heads have been known to scout a pharmacy and follow the legal user home then strong arm their way in to take the pills. Pharmacy Techs have been known to be complicit by supplying information on repeat users. We had one case here in Sebago this spring where the bad guys posed as DEA agents and took off a home where two legal Oxycontin users lived...

Do your deer have the "munchies"?
Is their fur "tie-dyed"?
Are the deer giggling quite a bit?:D

Is the local herd hanging around the pasture grooving to the Grateful Dead? :)

If the day comes when a cartel sets up shop in my area, then I'm moving asap ...

I've heard rumors, that a particular area within 100 miles of where I live (4 states) that it's not the cartels you should worry about, it's local authorities controlling the meth trade.

Well, whoever is responsible for the meth labs and pot fields aims to stay in business without anyone stumbling across their areas. A scenic stroll through the woods ain't what to used to be ...

When I was in High School there would be some hysteria about growing operations in Indiana. Most would turn out to be remnants of commercial Hemp Farms from WW2. It was mostly low THC Cannibus Indicus (not sure of that name). After all canvas is a corruption of cannibus. Any of you hoosiers know if these fields are still around?

It ain't just in the sticks. A while back, a woman was arrested in our local Wally World making meth. Right there in the store. She gathered the ingredients and went to town. Then yesterday, TPD and TFD pulled a guy out of the storm sewer in the Wally World parking lot, naked, dehydrated and disoriented. He was about half a mile from where it dumps into the Arkansas River, and they think he went in to make meth and got lost in the labyrinth. Oh, and this Wally World? Right across the street from a well known Christian university.

When I was in high school I was deer hunting on some leased land. Ran smack in the middle of a big pot field. Scared the snot out of me. Thought I was dead before I could get back to the truck.

Back in the 80's a friend and I were out in a wildlife management area doing some pre-season scouting for squirrels when we came across a grow. It was only a mile from the road by boat but using shoeleather express as we were was about a 5-6 mile walk. We beat feet outta there and contacted the sheriff and led his crew to the site. While it wasn't a huge operation we pulled almost 100 mature plants. As we were about to part company the sheriff told me and my buddy to "carry something for snakes from now on when we went into the woods" (pre CCW days in Arkansas then).

Some of the locals in Northern California where I hunt have told me the "grows" went from being run by "Old Hippies" to the Cartel folks. Obviously the locals preferred the hippies.

I think they have all been eradicated. The state police got pretty adept at spotting it from their helicopters and at one time were spending a fair amount of time flying for that purpose. I don't think it is nearly the problem it was in the '80s, but I don't know any of the pilots any longer, so I really don't know. I would think that stuff would be pretty hard to eliminate with burning and spraying.

The smaller growers will always be around, I am sure. Like A10, I assume that if you are roaming the woods you should at least have your pistol with you. :)
