To Re-Load or Not???

use a cheap B&D cordless screwdriver, I really liked the synthetic oil case lube thing....I am gonna try that!!

I also liked that synthetic motor oil tip. Once I burn through the Hornady One Shot case lube I have, I'll give that a go.

that is exactly where I am at...although I have about 5 different case lubes, some work better than others. the ability to lube one and then do 10 cases intrigues me and would make lubing cases a whole lot easier and quicker. Just remember before you switch over you have to clean all the old lube out of your resizing die!! :)

So true. I use one shot but when I needed to size a couple would use unique wax. Bad idea, after getting a few stuck cases I figured out what was happening.

Been Real busy last few weeks with big race at my Track last weekend...

So last Time I went shooting 2 weeks ago, I was told by a local that we cant shoot there....
So days of searching web, Maps, BLM web site and maps... and I still came up with same results... Yes i can shoot there...

So Found Alternate location near other site... and headed out Last Monday (week ago) New location was ok... to many Rocks for ricocheting Bullets.. So decided to Drive down to end of this road (2 miles from Normal Shooting Spot)... 1st thing I see... SHOOTERS Sign in GREEN..... OK to Shoot.....ok so at end of road ok to shoot... lets check old spot...

You Guessed it... since my last trip out they posted signs that it is OK to shoot there..... WOOOO HOOO... Guess i can still read maps after all

LOL

Anyways... just hadent been on in awhile so shared my Find with ya all..

Oh and that Day... shot all my loaded rds... to ta Hit the bench again

.................

Thank you gentlemen for your advice throughout this thread. Without it, I would not have got to this point.

I hope to get to the rifle tube in the next couple weeks. I'm nervous/anxious to pull the trigger on my first .223 reload.

I just watched the first couple videos in GMC's post. I see that at some point I'll need a primer pocket swager to process military primer pocket crimped brass.
:)

No worries. It's cheap and easy too. I use a case burr trimmer that looks like a rocket ship. The pointed nose is for de-burring the inside neck (after trimming) and the inside legs are for de-burring the outside of the neck. The tip will clean out the burr in the crimped primer pocket nice as pie. Just be careful,it only takes a very light little twist.

+1 on the case bur trimmer, but go very light as he said. I have used it to decrimp some cases and still have good primer pockets but you just want to chamfer the lip of the primer pocket

Reloading is a money black hole. :)

When I went into it, I told myself that I'd have to reload just X amount of rounds to reach point where the amount of ammo savings offset the initial investment in equipment.

Then I told myself that adding die kits would help me reach the break even point quicker, even though I've increased the amount of money spent on equipment. It will work out.

Now I'm telling myself that adding time-saving equipment will help me reload safer and increase my output.

...now hoping to make the space for a turret press...

John I dont have the pocket swager and so far (knock on wood) havent needed it. But I found a recipe today for 223's using my longshot powder. 11gr behind a 55gr bullet, supersonic 2800fps. gonna give it a try. I bought the longshot for my 45 colts but then bought H110 for them, although I have loaded 20 rounds with 12.3gr of Longshot. Now I am going to load 15rounds of 223 with Longshot and see how they do. 11gr of powder if they work would be a bunch of rounds out of a pound of powder.

I have yet to need a pocket swager for .223 either. It would come in handy for those 9mm NATO crimped cases. I'm just looking for an excuse. :)

I'm sticking to CFE223 for now. 55gr Winchester Soft point over 25gr of CFE223. From the online load data, that should be a safe starting load. I'll work my way up from there.

I found a good deal on a Lee Loader for .45 ACP. I couldn't resist it. I already use a very hands on reloading system. The Lee Loader looks like it would be a complete hoot to use.

Reloading is addictive. What can I say? :D

I have wondered about the lee loader for my pistol rounds. I dont shoot them as often as I do my rifles but have seriously wondered about a lee loader to take with me to work up loads for my AR and some of my other guns so please let me know how that works out for you!!

Range trip

I think I will leave my settings as they are 55 grain winchester FMJ BT 25 grains CFE223 and CCI primers #41 with a heavy crimp and here are my targets at 50 yards.

So how full does the case get with Longshot powder. I've always found "fuller" cases get a better burn over a lesser filled case (why I always favored 4895). Less powder in the case moves around (I know it's only milliseconds) but it's still a different burn rate.

You might just want to buy the Lee Breech Lock Hand Press + lock ring eliminator bushings. The Lee Loader set costs almost as much as a hand press.

That way you can use your existing dies, and not have to buy a new Lee Loader for every caliber.

Ok the rounds with the 11gr of longshot turned out to be just above subsonic and not enough pressure to cycle the action. they did shoot straight. at 50 yards they shot 3" low.
I loaded up a selection of rounds with CFE223, 27.8gr to be precise. the bullets were 55gr polytip blems from Midway (I think V-Max), 55gr Armscor FMJBT, 55gr Dogtown FBHP. I also shot some Ram 55gr V-Max that I purchased and some 75gr A-max over 25gr of CFE223 loaded to magazine length. We had almost no wind this evening and I set up @300 yards (I also took my camera) The pics are to follow:

I was shooting over the hood of my truck, standing, leaned over off of a bipod. I was wiggling a bit but I did get calmer. I need to practice and work on my loads but this documents my starts and I seriously had some fliers but I think I can do better with some experimentation....Or I really need to break down and get a 24" Barrel LOL:eek:

Looks like MOA of prairie dog to me! Shooting paper at 300 or more gets frustrating real quick for me cause I forget that's all I'm looking for. I use Sam's cola cans, a 6" gong or my prairie dog T. Gives the satisfaction of a reactive target without the frustration trying to shoot the perfect group.
