Hey all. New member here, been lurking for a few weeks. I have a M & P 15-22 currently at S&W repair (bought used and the extractor was broken). While I am waiting for it to get back I have been looking at all the things that I can add to my weapon. I do want an angled fore grip but without the benefit of actually handling the two my question is: the AFG1 is larger (a benefit since I have large hands) but the AFG2 is shorter and therefore saves space on the rail. Anyone out there with the original that could tell what they have forward of the grip? Will anything fit on the rail?

I have read thru most of the pages here on the forum and picked out the ones that had information regarding sending the weapon back to S&W with interest. Since I bought mine used I called customer support to try and find out what the cost would be but could not get an answer on that. I will post later with my experiences.

Keep in mind that the point of the AFG isn't even so much to be a real grip as it is to be point of reference. It's one of Magpul's "theory" based products, it's meant to be most useful when it's used in the "Costa grip" - with your hand foreward, gripping pretty high up.

The front of the AFG "wraps" around the bottom of the forend and the AFG2 doesn't.

From a practical standpoint, I see no difference on a 15-22. On an actual battle rifle, that might be another story. I have an AFG2.

Thanks, that was the info I was looking for.

These rifles are the same as a side by side UTV such as a Yamaha Rhino in that the sky is the limit in what one could spend upgrading. I have found a few I like: possibly a Hogue grip; an adapter type flash hider in lieu of having the barrel threaded and a flash hider added (cost is the limiting factor); a red dot scope and others.

TactiCool22.com makes an adapter that you can use to put any 1/2x28 threaded object on an unthreaded barrel. I did that to put a muzzle brake/compensator on mine. I filed a flat on the bottom of the barrel for the set screw and put a big bead of Blue LocTite between the barrel and the adapter. Still rock solid after several thousand rounds.

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Threaded Barrel End for Non-Threaded Muzzles [TBE2] - $30.00 : Tacticool22, Tactical .22 Rifle Parts and Accessories

Another company makes a A2 flash hider that simply slips over the end of the barrel and is held in place with a set screw, but I don't remember the company.

Be sure to check your state laws. Some states (such as mine) prohibit flash hiders - mine allows muzzle brakes and compensators. Go figure!

I have an AFG 1 and an AFG2, I don't actually like either. I've gone to a chopped down MOE grip to use as a hand stop.

You may want to look for a Cobra grip. They are like the AFG, but with a little more developmental time (took what people said about the AFG's and designed a new one)

I don't find there is any noticible difference in shooting from the AFG/AFG2. The AFG 2 was designed to allow fitting on more rails with more extra stuff on them, while using fewer slots itself.

I DO like a AFG on an MP5 though. Go figure......

I have an AFG2, feels weird when I use it, so I just use my regular grip, probably will take off the afg to clear up some room.

I tried the AFG on a friend's AR and didn't like it for my purposes. I have a 4" vertical grip with reliefs for the tac-light pressure pad in it. Since it also has a waterproof plug in the bottom, it also holds batteries and an Allen wrench that fits my reflex sight. The fore-grip is useful in positioning since I use the butt of the gun against my body as a pivot-point and the fore-grip as the sectoring control. The "laid-back" AFG grips just didn't work as well for me. My 15-22 is my fourth-level home defense weapon as well as a range toy so I like to have it as CQB-ready as possible

i tried both and didnt like them. the afg1 fit me better because of my larger hands. i dont see saving space on a 15-22 as all that important. personally i just grip under the handguard for more steady shots or my vertical grip for more fun 'n gun.

Is that, that weird stiff arm along side the rifle almost holding onto the back of the sight grip ???

I don't know, but mine is mounted with the rear of the AFG2 0.75" in front of the hinge - just far enough away to clear the lower when open. The vertical grips don't do anything for me.

To each his own weirdness. :)

You're not alone in your weirdness. I run my AFG2 the same way. ;)

I have the afg2 aswell and tried it both up front and all the way to the rear. I am much more comfortable with it to the rear aswell so there are a few of us. That being said I have always liked a tight close grip.

Will that work for a silencer or is it not a tight enough fit?

It's a tight fit, but I would talk to Joel at TactiCool22 before I used one for a suppressor. Since I have never done it, he's a better source of information on it than I am.

I like the AFG's and have both. I have the originals on my fat handguard carbines and the AFG2 on my slim tapered handguard rifle.. Works out just dandy.. Ron
