Is it me (probably) or are forum posters scary?

I want to put this in the lounge rather than respond to a specific thread and really insult someone.

So, after nearly 10 years on this forum I've learned a lot but it seems some of the recent posts leave me to wonder how some folks can be gun owners and be so clueless and well, stupid.

Years ago this forum was purely a wealth of information ( it still is) and sharing of "how to" info on S&Ws.

I've been around guns for 50+ years and handguns 45 years or so. Before I bought my first handgun I researched and read and and and..you get the idea.

It seems like in a lot of posts I read people are clueless and doing some downright scary things with their guns.

As to clueless if you are a newbie and you are asking questions because you really want to learn, that's fine. A think a lot of posts are "I want to be validated in whatever I already think"

I could point to specific threads to illustrate my point, but that would be rude.

I've also noticed since Obama got elected and thousands joined back in January '09 a lot of long time contributors/posters to this forum have disappeared. Either the grim reaper has showed up or they've moved on.

This was one fella if you mention a model (or pre-model) he would gladly show a picture of 20 to 30 of that gun WITH boxes.

I know I'll take some heat but just because the 2nd amendment says so, not everyone should own a gun. Heck I know of several folks who shouldn't be driving a car.

Oh well, opinions are like.....

I know what you mean. There are always those that want everyone to think they are better than they really are. I'll agree that some people shouldn't be allowed to own guns let alone shoot them. Had a friend once that almost shot me while quail hunting, no it wasn't Dick Cheney.

Millions shoudnt even vote! Millions shouldnt get married or allowed to reproduce. What was the old saying? Kennedy wants your gun, I dont trust him with a car!
About 1955 when I was 14, maybe I was 12, I went deer hunting for my first time with my dad. He set me on a spot to watch while he walked farther. It was at the edge of some brush on a marsh. It was maybe 150 yards from a secoundary road. Last hour of the last day of the hunt just before sundown. I seen a hunter walking to his car. He stopped, shaded his eyes and was looking towards me. I wondered did he see a deer around me that I couldnt see. Now his rifle came up and it looked like he was aiming directly at me . He fired and a bullet whizzed near my head! He kept levering and shooting at me 6 or 7 shots, I heard every bullet tearing on each side of me close. I didnt holler but froze. I had a single shot 20 guage slug shotgun. He was about maybe 120 yards away. When I seen he was trying to shoot a empty rifle (he levered and snapped it empty) I stood up out of the willows I had been hideing in. The guy ran for his car, threw the gun in without caseing it, (a no no in wisconsin) and scratched out wide open! This was about 60 years ago, so we had them back then too.

Dave,
I ventured an opinion here once, before I was aware that
all posts are available to anyone with computer access.
It was something I shouldn't have done, and was responded to
immediately by someone like yourself. It made me think.
I am careful now of my comments.
Thanks for posting, and whoever that was that kept me from
making a fool of myself, or worse.

44special Dave, yes I've seen some kind of scary posts, but they are in the Minority here, when compared to so many other forums. I've had a series of running skirmishes with one staff moderator at another forum over his and other members habit of referring to firearms as toys and training/range time as either play time or games.

I'll venture that thousands have become first time gun owners in the last 5 or so years. As tired as I get of the same old basic questions, I have to remind myself that none of us were born knowing it all. I also assume I asked some fairly basic,(stupid) questions when I was first involved in the shooting sports.

I also believe that we, whoever we are, have a duty to help anyone who comes to us and asks for help, as long as they do so in a polite fashion.

To correct myself; my post should read "some" posters are scary.

To TAAC1; sounds like you learned something. That's a good thing!

Gunslinger808;or as I head it; "everyone has value even if it's to be used as a bad example".

Feralmerril; Holy cow. I've heard bullets wiz by in the trees/brush. But don't ever think someone was aiming at me.

The forum to me is like a well of knowledge.

Many collectors and owners are able to pass it along to people who are just beginners and looking for guidance. These are the members who someday will pass along what they have learned to others.

I actually enjoy being corrected if I'm wrong, and must say I seem to learn something almost daily at this forum, been a gun owner for 25 years and still learning.

And remember, you will always have an oddball who someday may turn into a great gun owner, because of the S&W forum.;)

Old bear; Toys and play time? Ok. The 2nd amendment isn't for everyone.

As for asking questions, while really wanting to learn, I would agree.

As for helping others this forum has a lot of people who want to give good knowledgeable advice.

I guess there are unsafe folks in all walks of life. Just go to a DMV office.

Dave

To Saxonpig; You have a stinging wit to be sure. But I highly doubt you fall into the category of posters I was referring to.

Johngalt;sure why not? But seriously if you had asked; "I have a M&P 38 special that was my grandfather's that dates to the early 1920s. The cylinder chambers allow .357 magnums to go in. Is it safe to shoot with .357 magnums?"

If had asked the above question, you'd be "that" category.

By the way that was a real question asked in a gun magazine forum years back.

I've learned a lot about guns on this forum after getting off to a shaky start about what is allowed and what isn't. As the old saying goes, "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers." If someone does not seem well-informed, it could be genuine ignorance or a quest for knowledge.

I also would like to commend the moderators and the long-time posters for their patience in dealing with newbies such as myself. Whether it's gun talk or anything else that attracts a general audience, this is one of the best forums going and the mutual respect shown here is admirable. My 2 cents anyway.

It's not you Dave.

In the end, tho', this forum is just a microcosm of our society at large, so I wouldn't lose any sleep. It will always be "it takes all kinds" to make the world go 'round.

Now, your comment re: some people shouldn't own guns, that is controversial. However, I agree with you. Most citizens legally entitled to own guns seem pretty responsible, making an effort to be safe and improve their skills. But I definitely see and hear (and I don't mean just on YouTube) somewhere between 15 - 20 % of that group who, if I had my way, I wouldn't let them have a gun unless they changed. I mean, scary how unsafe and stupid they are.

But I'm not in charge.

:-)

Well, guys, I agree with him. And it's not just guns.

There's a world of difference among the words "practical," or "ethical," or "legal," or "permitted," or "recommended." Heck, there are lots of people who approach me and shouldn't even be able to purchase jackknives.

However, we do have 'equal justice under the law,' and if some idiot is determined to blow himself up out of ignorance, who are we to stop him?

I believe in being a mentor. That requires a sympathetic audience. Having said that, I cannot believe how many people have gotten modern drivers licenses--or even become members of my bike club. It's like the ideas of prudence, decorum and excellence have gone out the window.

Take a wild guess how many idiots put a thumb on my edges after I tell them not to? Well, it's so many that I do not hand over my own knives for inspection. I had to clean the DNA off knives I eat with far too often.

BTW, don't you know Dave, everyone nowadays is an expert or a victim.
