My Sheriff is the head of the Association
From what I've seen and heard, the sheriffs are all on board( maybe not in Westchester or Long Island)opposing elements of the new law.

Putnam County sheriff discusses gun law: Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith Discusses Gun Law

ALBANY — Sheriffs from across upstate are hoping the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo will revisit portions of the new gun-control law, saying the measure was adopted in haste and targets law-abiding gun owners.
The new gun law was adopted Jan. 15, and it has been a major focus of the state Sheriffs’ Association conference this week in Albany.

In reading that article, I was very concerned about the statement made by the NY Chief's of Police. They said they support the law because it will save lives but also protect the rights of "hunters and sportsmen". What does the 2nd Amendment have to do with hunting or target shooting??? NOTHING! Its about having arms to defy tyranical and oppressive governement (like we are experiencing now). The hunting and target shooting activities are secondary. These greasy politicians are either brain dead, or worse they are using the "hunting rights" baloney to dupe the uneducated / uninformed folks. -- If the Chiefs of Police don't know the purpose for the right to bear arms is for the defense of freedom, they should not be police officers!

The NY law is an interesting read especially since it doesn't exempt law enforcement from the ban. So once the cops are finished arresting eachother there shouldn't be any worry about them enforcing the ban.

The Sheriffs in NY are elected, and accountable to the people. The police chiefs are appointed by Mayors and town boards, so owe their allegiance to elected officials.

Many police chiefs in NY State actually come up through the ranks of their department, starting out as rookie patrol cops.

And they still get the chiefs job with the approval of town boards, city councils, or some other authority besides a civil service list or by virtue of an election. They get interviewed for the job.
Westchester County is loaded with police chiefs who serve at the pleasure of the elected members of various boards or councils.
Sherifs serve at the pleasure of the people.

My intent is irrelevant; I'm a retired private citizen at this point. I am hoping the law will be amended so as not to penalize law abiding citizens or infringe on their constitutional rights.
