Open Carry...

I went into a restaurant for lunch not long ago and took my coat off. I forgot to put my badge on my belt and was open carrying my glock. There was a table with a few cop-looking guys staring at me. I couldn't figure out why they were looking at me and then realized when I stood up to leave and put my coat on, what they were looking at. Point is: Yeah, it's your right but why would you want to draw attention to yourself whether it's because you're wearing a rainbow afro wig or carrying a gun? I like to be in the background as much as possible for about a million and one reasons.

you guys all have some excellent input, i'm very happy with the way the thread turned out to have so much serious consideration...thanks...actually, i've determined from this forum (and an insanely ridiculous mall-guard's comments saturday) that i will continue to CC except when i'm heading towards my parents' farm or my uncle's place...the mall guard set me over the tipping point...friend of mine asked him if he was paying attention more because of the recent shootings, the guard actually pulled his Glock out and said "damn straight"...stupid *** prob would have hauled off and shot me in the back if i had been OC...we called him in, and i don't think he will be there anymore, but it made me realize how much fear there is right now in the public eye, and i certainly don't want to cause more...thanks again for all of your input!

I don't always open carry, but when I do I prefer a fixed blade on my left hip.
The officer in this case was lucky not to have forced a fatal confrontation. The citizen in this video should have studied weapon retention more, and it would have been wiser for him to carry concealed, but that doesn't change the fact that this officer attacked him.
In short, I'm glad the OCing civilian was not more adept, otherwise he might have killed this officer, or given the officer enough of an excuse to kill him. I hope he succeeds in suing the scumbag for all he's got so that this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Oh trust me I agree. I have heard reports where "security" guards such as this one where badly hurt over foolishness like that. I know people who carry a backup gun who might have shot someone doing that.

Imo, regardless of your carry style retention should be studied and often. I don't know about everyone else but my oc holster has better retention than my cc.

Ok, I'll chime in...I'm in a open carry state.

Most of the references have been about carrying of pistols, but with a open carry, that means we can carry our rifles or shotguns in the truck rack. Without the open carry, then we couldn't.

In TN when taking the permit class the Instructor stated specifically that it is a handgun permit. Then reinforced that it has nothing to do with long guns, but you do see a lot of long guns in truck back windows.

There is no place in the second admendment that states how you have to carry. I prefer both method I oc most of the time however there are a few times that I will carry concealed if need

With the pistol, I agree completely on CC. Now with the long guns, I had an experience with that one. I'm an avid motorcycle rider and one day was riding and got a text(didn't check it while riding, just to reassure) that a long-time friend was in town for just the day and wanted to go shooting. My girlfriend had my truck and he was on remote property without vehicle so I had to go to him. Plus we have a lot better time there since there's nobody else. So I made the decision to just say h*ll with it and use my bike. I broke down my 15-22 and put it in my backpack. It was funny enough because I have one of those bags with an opening in the top for a drinking water hose, well the upper was too long to fit in the bag so i had the barrel sticking out the top. The bag had a couple pistols and ammo in it so no room for my Sport so it got securely strapped to the back. I even called my local police station and explained the situation and they said it wasn't an issue. Alaska doesn't require permits so it's perfectly legal. That being said, about half way there I had a State Trooper end up behind me for a while. He tailed me for about 5 miles until I pulled over into an empty parking lot. He pulled in and I shut off the bike and didn't move until he walked up. I knew the situation, and being in my mid-20's on a "crotch rocket" in full riding gear that's mostly black I knew full well what my stereotype was. So I talked to him and let him know what was going on and he was fine with it. He still followed me all the way to the road that I turned off onto. Moral of the story is just as all the others have been saying- the less attention the better. I know what I did wasn't the smartest, but it was situational. It's not a normal thing. I will say that I had more room around me as far as other vehicles go than I've ever had before. People don't see bikes, until the rider is carrying an AR lol.
