The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Finally a picture to add!

Never got around to adding a pic of my 28-2 after initially getting involved with this forum and have it figured out now. This "thread" has been one of the most enjoyable and educational reads I've had in a long time!

I replaced the magna grips with Ahrends cocobola grips and love 'em. Much easier and more comfortable to shoot for my hands!

Great looking grips, Canadienne. The holster is also really cool. Can you tell us who made it and how to get one if they're available?

Thanks,

JP

JP,

Thanks for the compliments. The holster was made by me. I've done my own leather work for years, generally nothing too fancy but stout. This one with the rawhide edge and basket stamp was pushing the boundaries. If you're interested we could probably work something out. I enjoy the work and wouldn't mind doing more. I can send you some other pics this evening of other holsters I've made if you'd like.

This is the first handgun I ever purchased, back in 1973. I paid $129.95 for it brand spanking new. The original numbered grips are in the box.

I've owned a fair number of guns since I bought it, but the only one that's ever given it any real competition in the accuracy department is a Colt snake gun.

Hard to believe I've owned it almost 40 years now.

My Third Smith

New to the forum, but wanted to add this one. #n283,xxx.
Haven't owned any Smiths in the twenty years I've been buying guns and have bought three in the last couple of weeks. Blame it all on the amount of information on this forum. Thanks. Seriously, thanks, I'm really starting to like them.

Went to my local pawn shop again today and I had been looking at this Model 28-2 4" for over a month deciding to buy or not to buy, I thought it must have a good home. It is a little rough around the edges and some minor cosmetic flaws but for $350 it has a sweet trigger action DA/SA and tight lockup, I think it was a good buy. The S/N is N18XXXX come to find out it is a 1973 vintage so it was a good pick up for me.

How do people find these for $300 or $350? I paid $535 for this one, SN N2369xx dates it to early 1975.

It really depends on the state. Most of the deals I have seen have been in pawn shops. Most private party sales or FFL transfers the seller knows what the gun is worth. Theyre a definite steal if you can catch one that low. Good luck! I'm always on the hunt

I bought this 28-2 quite a few years ago simply because the dealer had it out for a tragically low price and I couldn't let an S-numbered N frame endure any further humiliation lying there in the case. It's S/N 2626xx with the original grips, numbered to the gun.

The pictures don't really show it, but the barrel, cylinder and the flats of the frame are a fairly highly polished, deep blue. Not a Model 27 finish, but very nice in any period and exceptional by current standards. The top and bottom surfaces, on the other hand, have a quite coarse abrasive-blasted finish. According to the information in the first post, this is from 1966-1967.

Here's a few quick photos:

My recently purchased 4" barreled model 28-2 (that I can't pickup for nearly a month because of a darn pawn hold*) has a SN of S264xxx, so it was made sometime in the 66-67 time frame. Pictures to follow as always.

*Any gun traded in in my state to a gun store or pawn shop has to be held for 30 days so if it is stolen, the owner has time to report it.

Rough around the edges?! It looks like new to me! Now this is rough around the edges:

N429XX and I paid the same as you did!! Around here your gun would have been $750 at a minimum! Good score.
