m&p sport, wrong barrel

I am so confused.....I have a MP15 sport model. No forward assist, no dust cover and no flash hider. On my barrel it reads 5.56NATO 1/8 5R. I take it that it is chambered for 5.56 and the twist on the barrel is 1/8(one revolution of the bullet for every 8inchs). What does the 5R stand for? Mainly what I have read is these barrels do best with 55-79grain bullets?

My older version of the MOE has the 1/9 and chrome lining and it shoots a lot better than I do.
For what it's worth and that's not much, shot it, enjoy it and be glad you bought one without being gouged on price. Many places are charging as much as double what AR's were a couple months ago.

Nothing to be confused about. You have the original configuration. You have what is now thought of by some as: the premium barrel.

As for the 1/9 vs the 1/8, I don't think it's a big deal. The melonite treatment is more important IMHO. That's what I like most about that barrel.

The whole package is what made that barrel. While the Melonite is great, and "should" be more accurate than chrome lining, the 5R rifling is supposed to help accuracy as well. The 1/8 twist seemed to be a good compromise between the 1/7 milspec and the 1/9 twist on many commercial rifles, and should allow you to shoot a wide range of ammunition.

Of course, this is all theory, and would also depend on other factors, such as sighting systems, ammunition, and ability.

I don't believe I would worry too much about the 1 in 9 twist, not being R5 rifling would worry me more, being melonite is a big plus.
I also will be looking forward to some range reports on the new barrels.

We all know that a Melonite barrel is inherently more accurate than a chrome lined barrel so I expect the new barrel to be a good shooter as well!! (although the difference in accuracy may be almost unmeasurable)

I have the 5r melonite 1:8 twist. on my sport. Right now they are raising prices and taking advantage of shortages. In co I paid 650 for my sport. Now they are about 800 and have a crappy barrel. Do not buy the sport unless it has a 5r barrel because you already are getting screwed. No forward assist is ok for a sport model, but the lack of a dust cover on a ar is no good, looking to add some sort of dust protection for mine. Though the original sport was tested and even with out a dust cover it functioned well, just dont think its a war rifle and you will be fine. You can buy a sig in co for 900, I dont think any one should buy the sport anymore. S&W is using it to make extra profit because it almost cost the same as better rifles. The new adcor rifle will replace most ars anyway and s&w offers better rifles for almost the same cost as the m&p sport including some mid length gas systems. The new sports barrel may be a 1:9, melonite treated barrel, but they do not advertise it like that, because police and military want a 1:7 twist with a chrome lining and people usually want the civilian version of what they use -semi automatic is what i mean- (even though melonite offers adaqute protection and the rifle will be more accurate in the right hands, better grouping). 1:9 twist I heard may give you problems, but only with certain ammo, do a google search on the different barrels pros and cons. But if your like me non of this matters all I want is a functioning rifle or 6.

I bought a new S&W M&P Sport a little over three years ago. I ended up paying $400.00 for it at the LGS. I wasn't much impressed with it, no dust cover, etc. until I shot it. I was shooting 55grn Federal and the accuracy was impressive. I'm a dyed in the wool Chromed Chamber and Bore been to Vietnam kinda guy for the M16/AR15 platform, but after reading up on the melonite, I wasn't worried.

All in all, I live in a rural area and the M&P Sport is a great Around the House kinda gun. My wife likes to shoot it and other than the "Sproong" she thinks it's a great gun.

I'd highly recommend the 1/8 5R barrel any day of the week.

Why don't you take it back for a refund, and pay a little extra
and get the 15T with the barrel you really want? It's unfortunate
that S&W did the switcheroo on the barrels without letting it's
customer's know. You did your research, not go get the rifle
you really want! ;)

I don't think they will take the OP's rifle back, considering he has owned it for almost a year and a half... plus, he hasn't been on here since April of this year, so he probably won't see this...

Don't you just hate it when someone bumps an old, dead post? :D
