Quandry: Unfired 4" 17-6 w/Box, Docs, and Tools...buy?

I just ran across a Model 17-6 in original box, with docs and tools, at my LGS. They say it is unfired. They are asking $750.00 and have just reduced price, so they won't budge. It is a 4" and is absolutely beautiful. Do I pull the trigger for that price? I have it on a 2 day hold, so I can ruminate. Serial # is BEB0077.

I would buy it to because my 6" 17-6 needs a little brother. I don't think you will find a new in box one any cheapper

Seems a fair price to me. Even more so if the 4 inch is less common than the 6 inch, which I rather suspect it is. I sold a used 6 inch 17-6 for very close to the amount you quote and it was far from unfired with very slight muzzle wear and a small blemish on the left side of the frame near the latch. It did have the box and all the rest.

I've bought two that were both "as new", In fact the storeowner was writing the first one up as new and doubted me when I told him that his sales clerk took it from the used case. $625+tx @ fee. The second one at another was similar and was $585 +. A local GM had one nib for $830 and I've seen another shop advertising one for $749. Prices around my part of PA seem to be all over the place wether new or used. And all that I've mentioned were 4" full lug 10 shooters, and - 6's.........Dan.

It is the heavy barrel version, but not a full underlug.

I bought one two weeks ago for 700 OTD or ~ $652 pre tax. Mine is about 95%, but the grips were not original and the targets on it were beat up. I have already replaced them. Mine is the heavy barrel but not the full underlug, which I am told is more scarce than under lug barrels. It is a 1988 serial number and the SCSW says that the 17-6 was released in 1990, but I guess nothing is in stone with Smith and Wesson.

I think the price is high for 7 months ago, but now I am not as sure. It's in the range of "buy it and don't feel too guilty about the extra $x".

What is this "seller's remorse" of which you speak? I am unfamiliar with this "selling." I still own every firearm I have ever bought, except for a $30 single shot Marlin .22 I gave to my kid brother. And yes, I need yet another safe.

If it really is the complete package, I dont think $750 is a bad price. They ain't making any more of them. If you buy your real decision is whether to shoot it or not.

That decision is easy...I won't buy a gun that I won't use.
