Gorgeous, and thanks for keeping American greatness alive in Europe.

My next trip to the EuroZone, I am going to meet up with members that are owners. Pipes and Guns. That is the plan.

HP info?

Hi, I don't know much about my HP. It was my Grandfathers before it was handed down to me. I know the serial is S212294, and according to this forum was made 1960-1961. I also see MOD-28 stamped on it. Is there any more information on this gun? Any extra info would be appreciated, thanks!

Good looking example. Make sure it is cleaned and lubricated, and take good care of it.
It is a nice early 1961 build. You would have to send some information in to Smith and Wesson to request a history letter if you wanted to know more about this particular gun. A history letter provides the actual shipping date and what features or options were shipped with the gun. If it's a family heirloom keep it that way, because it has a pretty static value to collectors.

You do have a very common make and model. They made thousands.

Odd barrel sizes, and or special order or special factory engraved 28's get our collectors attention. Yours appears as standard order.

Just keep it wrapped up, and pass it along the family chain. The value should be in the family history.

Don't part with it for less then $ 700.00.

I figure I should throw up a pic of my 1966-67 -2 while I remember. l also have the diamond targets it came with. (don't mind the interloper, she may not have a soul and have one too many holes in her side but boy is she easy to carry.)

This one is the same one from post #1201 on this page, but now it's mine :)

It shipped two months after I did in 1963, so Kris was good enough to sell it to me so I'd have a nice birth year gun. It also fills the hole for a 4" HP in my collection.
(thanks again Kris!!)

Looking good Rick!

After I sold you that gun I was rewarded with another 4" 5 screw HP, this one is 1st year production (S110XXX) and will keep my 1955 4" company :)

I'll have to try to photograph my pair now that I've discovered this thread. My two were both local duty guns based on what I can tell. One is a 28-2 from 1973 and the other is a 28-2 from '78-80. The earlier model has the stock smaller wood grips and the later model has the wood target grips.

The finish on the '73 is a flat black and very utilitarian. The '78-80 has a different finish with a little sheen and the S&W logo highlighted in white. I'd love to see a link that talked about the various level of finish used on these over their run.

Also, as mine came from a local pawn some years ago, I have no boxes (that's OK) but I'd love to find a manual or pdf of one if someone has a link.

I recall that each were less than $250.

I wanted to post a couple photos of my 2 Model 28-2's. The top HP is a 1973 vintage #N112XX and the bottom is from 1978 #N5271XX.

The '73 has a matte finish with just the least little bit of sheen but the '78 has a pretty decent polish.

S&W tells me that the white lettering on the '78 was done post delivery. I'd have to pay to find out what grips they shipped with and to whom they were shipped.

The '73 came with the Target stocks IIRC and the Magnas were sent to me by a member of my guitar forum. I put them on the '73 which I rarely shoot and put the Targets on the '78. The '78 came with rubber stocks which I don't care for.

I'd guess the condition of both was 90%+. Most of the light marks in the photos are reflections.

First eight!

At the moment I have nine of the fabulous S&W Model 28! Here is a picture of the first eight! The second picture is of the ninth, another 28-2, 6", N297346, looks unfired, just received this week! I'll have a picture of the tenth, soon, due next week!

It also operates flawlessly. I believe the current market still offers great values for these well-made revolvers.

I dont always buy blued revolvers, but when I do I prefer them to look like these . :)

I own more nickel S&Ws and just a few blued. Of course my 28-2 is one of them. It also seems to get shot the most too, besides my 17 No Dash. In blue too. Both of them are still very good, but not up to those above . Maybe the blued ones are trying to tell me something. ;)
