I have always been a day late and a dollar short.

Today I went to the meat market to see what was left over after the holiday.

I am not a real big fan of "cow meat" I prefer elk if at all possible. we are down to hamburger meat as far as elk goes, so I went looking for some steaks. They had some ribeyes that were marbled like the good old days when people weren't worried so much about their fat intake.

I grabbed a family pack.

These steaks turned out to be in the top 10 of my all time best on the grill.

After a salad, steak, and a baked potato I was about as full as I have been in a long time.

So, after supper, I went out to the back porch and lit up one of the few cuban cigars I have left and poured a glass of 15 year old Glenlivet scotch.

A good ending to a good day.

Mrs. Carpriver made Shrimp Scampi for dinner tonight. salad with home grown lettuce homemade vinegar and oil dressing, a slab of garlic bread. I am as full as a tick. I took a snifter of 18 year old Elijah Brooks Single barrel bourbon out to the deck for a bit of relaxation. Ex-smoker all it takes is one smoke of any kind and I will lose all most 20 years of being smoke free. Good food deserves a good drink.

Sounds blissful...but I prefer bourbon these days. I like some Cuban cigars, dislike some others. I also like some non-Cuban and dislike some others. Had several 2006 Opus X Double Corona (CA cigar of the year for '06). Had them for 4 years before I cracked one out...absolute heaven!

My elk is almost gone as well...and I didn't draw for the upcoming season. I may need to do an OTC hunt in CO.

But, your day ended on a great note.

Must be the season. Not a Scotch drinker but last night I got done working in the garden (in the rain I might add) cleaned up, ate a good dinner and retired to the basement with a couple of shots of excellent private label Tequila I brought back from Mexico in May and fired up a very nice Cohiba. I love the small production Tequila's you can only get from private distillers down there. Smokey and nutty flavors go well with the Cohiba's. I truly hope we stop this embargo foolishness with Cuba, I have never understood it. We deal with China, Vietnam, Russia and the devil but keep our foot firmly on small businessmen and Women in a small country 90 miles off of our coast. Someone please explain the logic here.

I gave my old grill to my daughter yesterday. She didn't have one and I took mine over to her house for the 4th. I go through at least one a year and the year is getting close so I left it there. It was a simple affair geared toward the grandchildren but the hot dogs and hamburgers were great as was the blueberry cobbler. I went and got a new grill today and went by the butcher shop. All they had left was sirloins. No elk down here and I have only two packs of ground whitetail deer left so sirloins it was. I had a garden fresh salad with tomatoes, cucumber, and carrots topped with my favorite Vidalia onion ranch dressing and bacon bits with the sirloins washed down with some Mississippi muscadine wine and a little bourbon and spring water later. While scrounging in the freezers I found a deer shoulder I didn't know I had. It will get a slow cooking later this week and after the two packs of ground I'll be out until hunting season unless Jr. runs over another one. Maybe he'll use his ride this time.

I've smoked a Cuban before...

... and it was WAY to powerful for me. And I liked Scotch but I don't drink any more. I don't smoke any more either but I've tried bunches of high dollar cigars but nothing to me beats smoking a plain old White Owl or King Edward while walking on a crisp autumn day.

Two words: Florida.

Nothing better than a good steak, baked potato and glass of cognac.

I do that occasionally too but i also throw on some Senatra!

Also i swap Scotch for Tequila. As much as i like a peaty single malts they give me migraines even after a sip :(

It's a beautiful morning in central Texas and perfect for sitting on the patio. Watching and listening to the birds - doves, bluejays, mockingbirds, the occasional grackle - hearing the squirrels in the trees. The air is cool and still.

Too early for a scotch and cigar. But just right for a mug of coffee and a Marlboro.

Enjoy the day, friends.

Finally cooled down here to only 90. Got to sleep with the windows open for the first time in a week, night time temps in the 60's.. Good evenings to sit on the porch with a Tortuga or a Rocky Patel and a glass of Jefferson Reserve small batch bourbon...life is good.

Darn if that doesn't all sound good. I think this afternoon might have to do my version. I'll cook a killer stroganoff with some pheasant and dried black morel mushrooms that needs to be cooked. After that it will be some Forty Creek Barrel Select Canadian whiskey and an Oliva V #4 Ultra or Fuente 858 Sungrown.
