The scary movie topic got me in mind of, "The Legend of Boggy Creek", a semi-documentary about a supposedly real Bigfoot that terrorized an area in East Texas. One victim of it was treated at a Texarkana hospital and some girls testified that it tried to get at them in a house trailer. Some very experienced hunting dogs that'd trail bears were afraid of it and refused to trail it.

I've read about these creatures for decades and the most compelling evidence, apart from eyewitness testimony from reliable observers is twofold: One, an Army CID lab examined a hair supposedly left by one and concluded that it was not from any known animal, certainly not from the US Pacific NW . Two: Some of the best tracks are so anatomically detailed and correct that a professional scientist said they'd probably be impossible to fake. And the proportions (different from humans) are right in line with what'd be expected of a heavy primate about nine feet tall.

Personally, I pretty much think they're real. The chimpanzee, the gorilla, and the okapi were all thought to be mythical until quite recent times. (Late 19th to early 20th Century.) Stories of tribal peoples in Asia and North America have described these animals for centuries; they aren't a recent hoax, and descriptions from widely seperated peoples are very similar. One young one was supposedly put aboard a Canadian train to be taken to a zoo and examined, but escaped.

I largely doubt the legend of the Nandi "bear", but I think the Bigfoot/Sasquatch is probably real. The comments about those detailed footprints was the clencher. It would indeed be almost impossible to duplicate/fake the whorls and ridges in the prints in mud just right to retain sharp impressions. And doing that would take a specialized primate anatomist to begin with. The prints are not just big human ones; the anatomy is different and just what a scientist familiar with primates of that size would expect. The hair examined by the CID is also strong evidence, as well as the more reliable sightings.

I'm sure this topic will draw the usual wiseacres, but try to be objective and realistic. Do you believe in Bigfoot, and why or why not?

BTW, I think the Nandi bear is probably a large hyena or solitary baboon seen at dusk or in other poor light. Supposedly, European settlers saw it as well as Nandi tribesmen in western Kenya in colonial days. You can Search for more info. It's pretty interesting.

I don't want to get into the Loch Ness and other lake monsters in this topic. They deserve a thread of their own.

Beware: if some of you spell like you often do, I'm going to take that as evidence that you may be Bigfoot and will send researchers to your homes. :D

No! T-Star, usually I find your posts at least factual. Sometimes I think you are the Sheldon Cooper of S&W forum. But this is just not something I'd consider. :p

BTW, your OP is rife with misspellings and punctuation errors.

I find Bigfoot/Sasquatch intriguing to read about. I guess it brings back some nostalgia when I was a child and had read stories about some of the other mysterious and allusive creatures out there. I think if you enjoy the outdoors like I do, you'd still like to believe that maybe there are still undiscovered places that hold some form of adventure or wildlife yet to be known.

Here are some website that report sightings. Even if you don't believe, they're still fun to browse.

Ron-

I posted while on the phone to my doctor. When she hung up, I corrected the errors. Sorry: comes of trying to do two things at once. I sometimes post, and then read the post and correct.

And I am being factual: those detailed footprints are compelling evidence, as is the hair examined by the lab and the more reliable sightings. I think these three are all evidence that would be accepted in court in a criminal trial. That's a pretty high standard of likelihood.

Remember, a professional scientist (Primatologist) with a doctorate who examined those prints would be regarded as an expert witness. So would the CID crime lab staff.

Oops! Better check the spelling of compelling and mythical and described. We're all human dude. You need to knock off of these constant corrections. It ticks some people off.

I hope they're real--possibly descended from or even representatives of Gigantopithecus--but it's hard to get past all the dubious sightings, definitely mistaken sightings, and outright fakery that have clouded the issue.

I can imagine their being elusive enough to remain largely out of human view. I have a little trouble with the fact that no clearly identified remains of dead ones have been recorded. I know, I know, rodents in the forest, or perhaps they bury their dead. I rather doubt it.

But I want to believe.

I thought the movie Harry and the Hendersons was funny. Does that make me a believer?
I believe there is a better chance that Bigfoot exists than of Chevy Chase ever being funny in his movies. Oops. Chevy Chase was in another Bigfoot movie I think. but my original statement stands. And John Lithgow is hilarious.

Hi! :) Glad to see your post. It isn't just rodents that destroy remains. I understand that the soils in many aeas of heavy sightings are rather acidic and destroy bones. This has also been observed in South America and accounts for very limited evidence of known human tribes. I was just doing some research on the tribes known collectively as the Xingu, who live along Brazil's Xingu River and the Yanomami, who live near the Venezuelan border. The articles mentioned the effects of the acidic soils.

I think Bigfoots are real. I think there is more evidence supporting BF than not. I think soon we will have proof. But maybe its best to keep it an unknown, a legend, its just more fun this way.

As to not finding remains, I doubt these animals just die all of a sudden, like an old dog they go off some where and die when its time. These somewheres may be really remote caverns or canyons. Scavengers take the flesh, rodents eat the bones, insects take care of the rest.

TS, you should do a poll.

I grew up in the foothills of the Cascades in Oregon, not far from Mt Jefferson and the Three Sisters. Growing up there, I heard lots of stories from loggers who worked the Cascades, but personally never saw anything. I'd like it to be true. There's a lot of uninhabited forest up there where anything could hide if it wanted to.

I personally know two very reliable people who have seen a Bigfoot, one in the state of Washington and the other in Florida.
There is plenty of Bigfoot folklore in Native-American culture that has been passed down for many generations. Teddy Roosevelt wrote a story about a Bigfoot encounter out West in one of his hunting books.

I'd also LIKE to believe. I'd also like to believe in visitors from other planets (I think). I believe aliens from outer space are more likely.

Ron-

Have you seen my previous posts about being at a remote radar site in Newfoundland when the Weapons Control Officer came out to my entry conrol post and borrowed a binocular to look at a UFO that he'd just called the F-106's down from Goose Bay to investigate?

I also got a B&L 7X50 and we went out in the cold night and watched it, but it was so high that it just looked like a planet that was moving oddly. When the fighters got close, it shot off at a speed exceeding that of known aircraft. We never learned what it was. Those fighters were capable of Mach 2 speeds but were easily left behind.

I'll keep your spelling comment in mind. It just gets to me sometimes that we have members who can't even spell a simple word like "knives" and even dispute the spelling. All they have to do is consult a dictionary.

Missionaries told tales of a manlike hairy animals in Africa and were called liars for 200 years, until 1847 when a dead guerrilla body was brought to England. Giant Squid living in the deep waters were considered a sea-goers myth until a few years ago. Legends of a "singing ape" in Vietnam and Laos were laughed at for years, until sighted, photo'd and confirmed in 2010. An almost man sized monkey was rumored in New Guinea for years, just seen and confirmed in 2011.

Is Bigfoot real? Who knows? Is it possible he is and not confirmed? Yes. Time will tell.
