A friend bought a early model 5906 from me a few months back after shooting it first. The only issue was an apparent FTE. We tried new recoil springs, different mags, many types of ammo and bullet weights and the problem persisted. I figured a weak extractor spring or chipped/broken extractor. So off the gun went to S&W and after a couple of months, he heard back today that their initial diagnosis was incorrect and the gun had a cracked frame. This gun looked almost new and wasn't showing any of the typical wear a high mileage gun would have, yet S&W said it was a cracked frame. Has anyone seen a 5906 with a cracked frame?

Me too. I am an original owner of one too. Did I forget to mention, they are sending him a new M&P 9mm in place of the 5906.

Of course 5906's are long out of production, and it's great that S&W is trying to help him with the replacement instead of just saying "so sorry", but I'd be asking if they had any LE overrun 3rd Gens in their vault as a replacement.;)

Great warranty service, even though it's OUT of warranty

I find it very hard to believe as well. I've seen wore out 5906's that ate a steady diet of +P+ that didn't have any problems.

I'd ask for my 5906 back and take it to a gunsmith for a second opinion. No way I'd accept that M&P 9 in place of a 5906. Regards 18DAI

I'd take that M&P in an instant. Then I'd sell it and start shopping for another 5906. With the way things are now, I'd probably have cash left over.

Surely you don't think they saw this as an opportunity get one of those old 3rd Gens off the street and get a M&P into the hands of one of the unwashed?;)

I wouldn't take it either, though if they had an overrun CHP or WVSP contract gun I'd make that trade.

Well maybe they should just give him back his ol' cracked frame gun and save themselves some cash. But then, they would be trashed on the S&W forum for not doing the right thing.
Damned either way.

I believe I said in a earlier post that I thought it was great what S&W was doing. It's just not trade I'd be interested in.

Best

I'm no metallurgist and I'm not saying S&W is lying but I've read of aluminum frames cracking but never a steel one.

The fact remains though that the Houlton plant is still chiming out 5946NYPD pieces, changing the fire control from DAO too TDA shouldn't be all that hard (if they still have said parts on hand), and mating his slide with a new frame.

Although they are still making contract 5946 models, the fact is, the frames are VERY different, not just the fire control parts. Here is a side by side comparison of a model 5943 (alloy, yes, but dimensionally the same as a 5946), and a 5906. Pay particular attention to the area behind the hammer, you can clearly see the vast difference in the DAO frame versus TDA.....Guns ARE mechanical machines, and are operated by the most violent of means (controlled explosion), and although not common, failures simply happen.

They look like the same thing, only different! ;)
